Chapter 220 — Convergence

The Sword Questions the Heavens · Page 2 of 6

Zhou Yixuan was overjoyed and hurried to meet them, drawing the two of them far off to one side, asking question after question. Xiao Bai had at some point emerged from the little room as well and stood far off to the side, watching the three of them in their happiness. Yet her expression was still noticeably grave, and from time to time she glanced at the depths of the darkness within the little room.

By now the dust in the courtyard was gradually settling. Xiao Bai stood motionless, while over on Zhou Yixuan's side the three, having escaped catastrophe, ought by rights to have been overjoyed. But for some reason, at this moment, from a distance they appeared to be quarreling—or more precisely, Zhou Yixuan seemed to be saying something to which Xiao Wan was firmly opposed, while the Wild Wolf Daoist, as ever, merely watched them speak and offered no opinion of his own.

Xiao Bai stood at a distance watching them argue for quite a while, and it seemed they could not reconcile their views. Her curiosity stirred, and she could not resist quietly moving closer. She heard Zhou Yixuan say with a frown and in no good humor, "Enough, say no more. We leave this cursed place at once, or if we wait for that demon to return, we truly will have no place even to die."

Xiao Wan gave a cold laugh. "And what about the person in there?"

Zhou Yixuan was briefly stumped, and it seemed he could not help feeling some shame. Yet he would not concede the point aloud and stubbornly insisted, "What do you know, child? For one thing, that person has been hit with the rare art of the Heart-Slaying Lock; for another, there are other seals upon the coffin. We cannot save him. Better that we get ourselves out first. Otherwise, if we dawdle until that demon returns, won't we be throwing our lives away for nothing?"

Xiao Wan said angrily, "Grandfather, you are talking nonsense again. That day that person was clearly captured by the demon because of us. How can we be so ungrateful?"

Zhou Yixuan shook his head vigorously. "Wrong, wrong. That he was captured that day is true, but that he was captured because of us is sheer nonsense. By this old man's judgment, that demon's Daoist attainment is so high that we of course cannot compare—but neither could the one who helped us possibly match it."

Xiao Wan's lips puckered out furiously. "Whatever the case, we cannot simply leave him behind and do nothing!"

Zhou Yixuan's brow was tightly knit, and he was putting on a bitter face, about to make another attempt to persuade this stubborn granddaughter, when Xiao Bai's voice suddenly came from beside them: "This person you speak of, and that demon as well—who exactly are they?"

Xiao Wan and the Wild Wolf Daoist both started, then shook their heads in unison. Xiao Bai glanced at Zhou Yixuan, but he averted his eyes and said, "The three of us are all ordinary folk. How would we know anything about such people? We were scared half to death. We don't know."

Xiao Bai frowned slightly. As for the girl before her and the Daoist beside her with his strange, doglike face, she did not doubt that they knew nothing. But this old man Zhou Yixuan was exceedingly odd, enough to set anyone's heart muttering, and there was very likely something strange about him. Yet Zhou Yixuan insisted he knew nothing, and though Xiao Bai was suspicious, she had no way to press him. She could only ask Xiao Wan, in a spirit of giving it a try, "Little girl, do you remember what sort of magic treasure or weapon the person who helped you and the demon used?"
