Chapter 24 — An Awkward Incident

"Sir, that's not what I meant. I'm not saying you stole anything—it's just that the alarm went off, so I have to come check according to supermarket regulations. Please don't make things difficult for me, all right?" The guard looked at Zhang Bin's clothes and at everything he'd bought. This really didn't look like the sort of person who'd stoop to petty theft, so his tone grew more polite.
Seeing the young guard's troubled expression, Zhang Bin found it a little hard to give him a hard time. The man was just doing his job for a paycheck; Zhang Bin knew there was no point in making things difficult for him.
"How do you want to check?" Zhang Bin asked helplessly.
"Just take off your coat and walk through the security gate again, sir," the young guard said. "And sir, please think again—is there anything you took without paying and tucked into your pocket, or anything you paid for but didn't pass out through the cashier's designated lane?"
"Ah—things that were paid for inside don't count either?" Zhang Bin scratched the back of his head and suddenly remembered: there were two boxes of condoms in his coat pocket.
"Even paid-for items are no exception. They still have to be checked by the cashier," the young security guard explained.
"Can't I just not take them out?" Zhang Bin felt rather put on the spot.
"I'm afraid that won't work," the guard said, even more flustered. "Sir, if the items are already paid for, you just show them for a quick check and that's it. What do you have to be afraid of?"
"But this stuff of mine..." Zhang Bin glanced at Zhao Sisi. They might already be involved in that way, but if he pulled out two boxes of condoms in front of everyone, Zhao Sisi would be furious for sure.
To be continued.
