The Upper Narrator.
The moment Gao Yang heard this stiffly assembled phrase, he was briefly confused for less than a second before vague conjectures began to form from its meaning.
Instantly his expression turned serious, his manner earnest.
Inside Sandbox One… something had indeed happened that no one had anticipated, and this so-called "divine contamination"… was likely far more complicated than anyone had guessed!!
What Gao Yang could infer, Selena and the others of the Illumination Order could of course infer as well; the phrase "Upper Narrator" itself contained a great deal of directly comprehensible information. Yuri, that refined man wearing a monocle, quickly knitted his brows and looked at the old priest who was being hypnotized by Selena: "What exactly does the Upper Narrator mean?"
"The creator of the world, and the destroyer of the world; the watcher of the world, and the guide of the world…" A serene, peaceful smile surfaced on the old man's face beneath his gray robe, and with the joy of one spreading the faith he spoke slowly, "To our world, He is the all-knowing, all-powerful, and irresistible sovereign…"
Listening to these standard missionary declarations, Selena's brows contracted almost imperceptibly, and she cut in: "How was the world born?"
The high-ranking priests of the dark sects were all experts deeply versed in religious studies, and they well understood how to gather intelligence swiftly upon first contact with an unfamiliar belief system and grasp its essence. Generally speaking, every mature faith would inevitably attempt an interpretation of the world's birth, and the way they interpreted that birth would reveal to the greatest extent their worldview and mode of thought, as well as their principal dogmas and core myths.
The old man in the gray robe looked briefly lost, then, guided by the hypnosis, spoke aloud the things he held firmly in his heart:
"The world… was woven by the Upper Narrator. From a void He first created the chaotic sky and the gray-white earth, then bestowed color and form upon all things in the world… Then the Upper Narrator laid down the rules by which all things move, and wrote the earliest history, and so the world began to turn, and under the power of law, life went on without end…"
"…Consistent with the startup process of Sandbox One," Selena said in a low voice to Yuri and Daniel. "The Upper Narrator… refers to us."
"A religion worshipping the 'Upper Narrator' was born inside the sandbox?" Yuri's face bore an expression of disbelief, his voice so low it was as though he were talking to himself. "Is this the 'trace of the divine' we observed? A sect born within a dream… could it possess 'divine power'?"
"I don't know, but if this sect born within the dream really is the 'divine contamination' we observed…" Selena's voice suddenly took on a distant quality, and even a tremor entered her tone, "then… then we may well have unwittingly touched the ultimate secret of this world, the ultimate taboo!!"
Beside them, countless conjectures and hypotheses were likewise turning over in Gao Yang's mind, and a question suddenly occurred to him. He could not help looking at Daniel: "Was this sect that worships the Upper Narrator born only after Sandbox One went out of control? Before the sandbox lost control, did the monitors not discover this sect?"
Daniel turned at once to Selena and relayed Gao Yang's question verbatim.
