Chapter 13 — Attending a High-Level Meeting

"According to Yu Yanan, the young lady and Yan discussed real estate matters in the study all night long, and the discussion was quite heated—it didn't look like playacting," Sun San said.

"I understand." Sun Lin nodded. "Whether it's playacting or not, we'll know soon enough. Third Brother, neither of us knows much about real estate. In a little while I'll find an expert to take a look for me."

"Very good," Sun San said.

"By the way, about you and Yu Yanan—I understand. Tell you what: I'll give you a time. Once Sun Jie is married off, your matter with her can be settled along with it," Sun Lin said with a sigh.

"Master, we're people of such an age—we stopped thinking about such things long ago. Don't tease me," Sun San said, flushing scarlet at the sudden remark.

"Old, are you? Why shouldn't you think about it? Old people have old people's love too," Sun Lin said. "All right, this matter is settled. When the time comes, I'll arrange it for you."

"Yes—thank you, Master," Sun San said, deeply stirred. He knew Sun Lin always meant what he said, so he raised no further objection and hastily expressed his thanks.

Yes—he had waited far too long for this day. The Sun family's strict household rules were not something Sun San dared defy, and Sun Lin rarely changed those rules for anyone's sake. But today, an exception had been made.

Of course, that was also because Sun Lin happened to be in a decent mood today. And why? Because Sun Jie, who had always remained single, had finally been willing to grow close to a man—which meant his daughter had begun to entertain thoughts of that kind.

Setting aside for the moment whether Yang Ce was worthy of being the Sun family's son-in-law, at least Sun Jie having a boyfriend was far better than being alone. Besides, over the years Sun Lin had lowered his standards for Sun Jie's partner considerably—from endlessly introducing her to prestigious families at the start, to every day nagging her like a fussy old man to hurry up and bring a boyfriend home.

This was also why Sun Lin had not intervened after learning about Yang Ce. No matter what, he would watch and see. If he truly forced his hand, would his daughter—who had finally let her heart be stirred—shut it away completely?

So Sun Lin dared not act rashly; he could only quietly investigate Yang Ce from behind the scenes. And Sun Lin knew his proud, strong-willed daughter well. That Yang Ce could appear at this meeting today could also be read, indirectly, as Sun Jie showing him her boyfriend.

Given the Sun family's present status and wealth, there was no longer any need to set requirements for Sun Jie's choice of partner. The man's identity had, in fact, come to seem less than especially important—after all, the Sun family was now the foremost house in Donghai.

But what the Sun family lacked most now was talent—and that was Sun Lin's greatest worry. However formidable Sun Jie might be, she was still a woman, and there were some matters a woman could not be allowed to handle—matters on the underworld side of the Sun family's affairs, for instance, were hardly suitable for Sun Jie.

And Sun Zhiwei was plainly an Adou who could not be propped up—how could Sun Lin not fret? When he was gone, would the Sun family's vast estate simply be destroyed in a single stroke?

It was precisely for this reason that Sun Lin had not interfered in the matter between Sun Jie and Yan. Because he was watching—watching to see just what sort of man this Yang Ce really was.

If he truly was a talent, then his origins hardly mattered. The Sun family did not lack for pedigree, and true talent need not fear humble origins. Conversely, even a young master from a prestigious house, if he was a useless fool, was of no use at all—in time he would ruin not only the Sun family's estate but his own family's as well.
