Chapter 529 — Holy Light and Holy Light

Blade of Dawn Page 2 of 2

"No. One should face one's own ignorance honestly," Wright replied. "The road to absolute truth is endless; we can ever only grasp the 'relative truth' within the reach of our minds. Perhaps there truly is an answer that can explain all the secrets of the Holy Light, but I do not know it yet. I only know that this is precisely what we must seek. And I must remind everyone here—do not blindly follow anything that claims to be 'absolutely correct,' for even I, the Great Pastor, cannot be absolutely correct. We should boldly seek the truth and cautiously verify it, and remain humble, so that we may continue forward on this road of exploration."

Wright's words provoked another round of discussion, and after the discussion the sermon continued.

At last this "sermon" came to an end. The people in the church rose one after another, dispersing in twos and threes, and the once-full pews quickly grew empty. Wright watched the congregation leave, then rose to tidy the original scriptures of the Holy Light and other materials on the wooden reading stand, while a small, faintly glowing figure drifted over from not far away, carrying a cup of water to him.

"Drink up~~ You worked hard!!"

"Thank you," Wright took the cup and gently patted Emily's hair without quite touching it. "You were very good today, didn't cause any trouble for anyone—you deserve praise."

Emily beamed happily. Wright casually glanced around the church, then suddenly noticed that a slender female figure in a hood was still sitting in one of the pews below.

Had she been sitting there the whole time? Why hadn't he seen her earlier?

Puzzled, Wright walked toward the hooded woman, who seemed to have no intention of rising: "Madam, the sermon has ended—is there something you need help with?"

"I do have some doubts," the hooded woman raised her head, and as she removed her hood, pale golden hair spilled loose, revealing a beautiful face with a serene smile before Wright. "Great Pastor of the Southern Church."

Wright regarded the golden-haired woman calmly, while Emily beside him stared in amazement at this unfamiliar sister she had never seen in the church: "Sister, who are you?"

Then the little girl exclaimed: "Wow! Sister, you're glowing all over!"

"Emily," Wright gently pressed the little girl's hair, "go to your room and rest first. I'll have a talk with our guest."

Emily blinked, looked at Wright, then at the "unfamiliar sister," hesitated a moment, and nodded: "Oh."

The little girl's figure gradually faded from the air.

Virodai watched all this without a word, yet a tranquil, peaceful Holy Light spread through the church, rippling among the rows of pews like a gently undulating sea. In this ocean of Holy Light, Wright simply stood quietly where he was, the rippling radiance flowing past him as though ignoring his existence—or as though he ignored the existence of that Holy Light.

A faint glow of his own cloaked him.

At last Virodai broke the silence: "There are no guests who come to a church—only lost lambs, are there not?"

"That is your phrasing. We have cast it aside of late," said Lightpinscher, then sat down beside Victoria. "No one is a lamb in need of guidance. All who come to the church are seekers alike."

"Truly a novel and radical doctrine," Victoria nodded slightly. "Just like your sermons—but they are all quite interesting."

Light looked at the living saint of the Northern Church before him with some astonishment, at this holy-maiden princess who could speak for the traditional church's forces: "You think this is interesting?"

"At the least, I have never heard doctrine of this kind. That alone is interesting enough," Victoria said, watching Light's eyes. "Could you tell me of your teachings?"

Light suddenly felt the situation was a little absurd.

He knew the living saint of the Northern Church had come to the Southern Marches, but he had never imagined he would speak with her under such circumstances, in such a calm and level manner.

But whatever the case, expounding doctrine was his duty, so he nodded: "If you truly wish to listen."

"Today I am only a listener—ah, in your phrasing, a seeker."

Light gathered up all his doubt and his sense of the absurd. He straightened his back and began to recount the doctrine, unhurried and clear.

This peculiar "sermon" did not last long. The new church's doctrine was not complex, and its contents were far fewer than the old church's rules and regulations. In his own plain words Light set out his understanding and apprehension of the Holy Light, and Victoria listened quietly the whole time.

When the "sermon" was over, the Holy Light rippling through the church also gradually faded away.

Light looked at the "holy-maiden princess" before him and guessed at what she would say, but Victoria merely rose to her feet and gave him a slight bow: "A most splendid explanation, Mr. Light."

No sooner had she spoken than her figure crumbled in an instant into countless drifting particles of faint light, slowly dissolving into the air.

"So it really was only an avatar..."

Light watched the last thread of faint light disperse and muttered softly.

"What exactly did she come here for?"
