Wei Zhao patted Shen Yushu's shoulder in consolation. Even without her asking, he would not let Zhong Yongliang off — only the method would have to be more roundabout. Since Gu Pengzhan did not want to escalate the conflict, Wei Zhao intended to shift the conflict onto someone else.
Back at the villa, after comforting Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu with a few words, Wei Zhao returned to his room. He still had to deal with Zhong Yongliang.
He used the computer to clip a portion of the recording from the voice recorder, then dialed An Liwen's number.
An Liwen picked up quickly: "Brother Wei Zhao?"
An Liwen had never expected Wei Zhao to call him of his own accord. True, he had given Wei Zhao a sum of money for investigating the case, but he was not at all sure Wei Zhao could dig up any news about Gu Mengyao. In An Liwen's view, Wei Zhao was not the sort of man who was easy to deal with.
"Brother An, it's me," Wei Zhao said. "Do you have time right now?"
"Now? What's this about?" An Liwen happened to be out drinking with Su Taizao, and he could not guess what Wei Zhao meant by calling at such an hour.
"Brother An, I have not failed your expectations. After untold hardships, I've finally dug up some information about Gu Mengyao at school — information about her suitors!" Wei Zhao said.
"Oh? News about Gu Mengyao? I've got time. Where are you? I'll come pick you up right now and we'll talk face to face!" The moment An Liwen heard it concerned Gu Mengyao, his interest was instantly aroused. Never mind that he had nothing on his plate at the moment — even if he had, he would have dropped it first.
"I'm over at Gu Mengyao's villa. Come on over, then. I'll be waiting," Wei Zhao said.
"All right, ten minutes!" An Liwen said at once.
By the time Wei Zhao stepped out of the room again, Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu had recovered their composure; the two of them were in the dining room eating ravenously, and from the look of it they had been starving badly.
"I'm stepping out for a bit — going to get revenge for you two." Wei Zhao smiled. The two girls did look rather adorable in their present state.
"Great, great!" Shen Yushu, her mouth stuffed full of food, pumped her fist excitedly at Wei Zhao's words.
Gu Mengyao said nothing. She merely glanced at Wei Zhao and said, "Be careful."
Wei Zhao was a little unaccustomed to the young lady's tenderness; he froze for a moment before nodding.
Gu Pengzhan had no idea what Wei Zhao intended to do, but since Wei Zhao had promised him that the Gu Group would not be dragged into it, he set his mind at ease.
"Where are you going? Shall I have Qing Bo drive you?" Gu Pengzhan asked.
"No need. Someone's coming to pick me up." Wei Zhao smiled.
Wei Zhao's words left everyone in the hall startled — someone was coming to pick him up?
Wei Zhao smiled and went out of the villa. An Liwen's car had already arrived; catching sight of Wei Zhao, An Liwen immediately got out and said warmly, "Brother Wei Zhao, get in, get in!"
"Heh..." Wei Zhao sneered inwardly, though his face showed nothing but a normal nod. "This private detective business is no easy work," he said. "This time I've taken a great risk."
