Outside the gate of the amusement park's "Bungee Valley" sat Uncle Qing's Bentley—the car of Gu Pengzhan, chairman of the Gu Group. Every worker in the park knew it, which was why it could park anywhere it pleased.
After hearing Gu Mengyao's account of what had happened, Uncle Qing too fell into thought, and much of his earlier tension eased. If it was as Gu Mengyao said, and Wei Zhao had jumped knowing the danger, then either he had absolute certainty of coming through unharmed, or he was a fool.
Clearly, Wei Zhao was no fool. And even though Uncle Qing had told him not to stir the snake in the grass, there was no need for Wei Zhao to fling himself into certain death.
Still, Uncle Qing could not fathom why Wei Zhao would do such a thing. He reported the matter to Gu Pengzhan at the first opportunity.
When Gu Pengzhan received the news, he was stunned for a moment—and then he burst out laughing...
The laughter carried through the phone, and Gu Mengyao, standing nearby, heard it. She frowned, and in some displeasure snatched the phone from Uncle Qing. "Daddy, something's happened to Xiaoshu and Wei Zhao—what are you laughing at?"
"Laugh? Of course I'm laughing. The problem that has plagued me for days has finally come untied!" Gu Pengzhan laughed heartily. "I never expected it—never! Mr. Lin actually sent me a grand gift..."
"Daddy, what are you talking about? What gift? What do you mean, everything will be resolved?" Gu Mengyao was baffled by what she was hearing.
"Haha, Yaoyao, put Uncle Qing on the phone. I'll tell him, and then he can explain it to you slowly." Gu Pengzhan was plainly in excellent spirits—the business with Wei Zhao and Shen Yushu had not dampened his mood at all; if anything, he sounded delighted.
Gu Mengyao, utterly at a loss, handed the phone back to Uncle Qing, who took it and said, "Mr. Gu..."
"Li Fu, I never would have expected it—Wei Zhao has kicked up such a commotion that our troubles have simply melted away," Gu Pengzhan said with a laugh.
"Oh? Mr. Gu, you mean..." Uncle Qing's eyes lit up. He was one of Gu Pengzhan's old hands, and with that one remark he quickly grasped what his employer was driving at.
"Exactly. Notify the shareholders—the shareholders' meeting will convene tomorrow, Sunday, at eight sharp." At this moment Gu Pengzhan truly admired Wei Zhao; the man had played this hand beautifully.
Over the past weeks Gu Pengzhan had made several attempts to consolidate power within the company, but the results had been poor and the obstacles many. After all, chairman though he was, there were other shareholders besides him—if you wanted to gather power into your own hands, you still had to ask whether the others would agree.
In truth, Gu Pengzhan was not targeting anyone else; he was after Jin Gubang. But Jin Gubang was the company's second-largest shareholder, and if he moved against the man without any pretext, the other shareholders might all begin to feel unsafe in their own skins. Then Jin Gubang would fan the flames, pull them together into a coalition, and win them over to his side—and would that not leave the chairman himself hollowed out?
