Chapter 271 — The Knot Comes Untied

Gu Mengyao did not quite understand, but she was no fool, and it did not take her long to work it out: Wei Zhao must have discovered something. This "accident" had been aimed at her all along. Had she jumped first, she would have been the one to fall.
That puffy-faced man... Gu Mengyao suddenly remembered the bungee worker and jerked her head up to look for him, meaning to have someone seize him—but Xiao Ma was already long gone.
What set her mind a little at ease was this: since Wei Zhao had foreseen the danger and jumped anyway, he must have had a reason for jumping. Which meant nothing would happen to him.
She still did not understand what Wei Zhao was playing at, but by now she had calmed down. Wei Zhao had, in a sense, jumped in her place, and for that she was deeply grateful. Still—jumping was jumping. Why drag Xiaoshu along with him?
She was turning the whole sequence over in her mind, her nerves drawn tight, when her phone rang. Instinctively she snatched it out and glanced at the caller display. A flicker of disappointment—she had hoped it would be Wei Zhao or Shen Yushu. It was Uncle Qing.
"Hello, Uncle Qing?" Gu Mengyao answered.
"Miss Gu, where are you? I'm at the bungee platform. I heard there was an accident here, that someone fell—so long as you're all right..." Uncle Qing's heart eased at the sound of her voice.
When he had arrived at the bungee platform, he found a crowd gathered at the cliff's edge, no one quite sure what they were looking at. He had asked a passerby and learned that there had been an accident: a man and a woman bungee jumping when the cord suddenly snapped, plunging them into the sea.
Uncle Qing had nearly jumped out of his skin. Wei Zhao had telephoned earlier to warn that someone meant Gu Mengyao harm, and they were here at the bungee platform, and now—of all times—something had gone wrong. Instinctively he connected the two who had fallen with Gu Mengyao and Wei Zhao, and cold sweat broke out at once across his brow.
But at the sound of Gu Mengyao's voice, Uncle Qing was much relieved.
"Uncle Qing, something's happened to Wei Zhao and Xiaoshu—they fell..." Unease stirred in Gu Mengyao's heart, but at the memory of Wei Zhao's steady expression, she felt an inexplicable surge of confidence in him. Wei Zhao would be fine. He had to be.
Foolish and flippant as the man usually seemed, he had a way of dissolving every crisis with ease—the bank robbery, for instance, or the chandelier incident in the underground garage of Pengzhan Tower. He always spotted the danger and smoothed it over, effortlessly.
So if Wei Zhao had foreseen the danger in advance, he would never have walked into it knowingly. There could be only one reason for what he had done: absolute certainty.
"What? Wei Zhao and Xiaoshu fell?" Uncle Qing was so startled his voice cracked. He had feared it would be Gu Mengyao who fell, but Wei Zhao and Xiaoshu falling was no better.
"Uncle Qing, where are you? There are too many people here—I can't explain properly. But I think they should be fine." By now Gu Mengyao had recovered her usual composure. A rich family's daughter was not merely a spendthrift; with the mind and intellect that had placed her in the top five of her year, she easily grasped the crux of the matter.
Wei Zhao was no fool, so he would not do anything reckless. Nor was he the sort to drag others down with him—that much was clear from the bank robbery, when he had taken a bullet for a stranger girl. So if he had brought Xiaoshu along, he would not let her come to harm.
At some unknown point, Wei Zhao had become invincible in Gu Mengyao's heart. It was an inexplicable trust, mysterious and inexplicable—and though Gu Mengyao was reluctant to admit it, a fact was a fact.
"I see you, Miss Gu." Uncle Qing's voice came from behind her, and the call clicked off.
