Once he arrived, Shi Jin grabbed a glass of milk and a plate of pastries at random. He still wasn't really hungry... the Ginseng Baby's nutrients were getting fiercer and fiercer.
Plate in hand, Shi Jin found a seat and sat down.
"Cough, cough, cough." Yet he hadn't sat long before the simple milk and pastries nearly choked him—because he had suddenly spotted a young man with an eye on his forehead walking past, and gave a violent start.
Shi Jin stared straight over. Just then Xia Yan, who had only just finished getting her breakfast, glanced over and said, "A Three-Eyed race mixed-blood."
"Mixed-blood, huh." Shi Jin murmured.
"Mm, a mixed-blood whose bloodline leans toward the human race." Xia Yan nodded. "Three-Eyed race humans can also open beast-taming spaces and become beast tamers, but their taming talent is uniform—it's that third eye. Its function is similar to the Heavenly Eye, a higher-tier skill of super-vision, belonging to the scouting category of special talents. They say it can even be used to see through a pet's potential talent."
"Whoa~" It was Shi Yu's first time seeing a living mixed-blood.
Key word: living.
Mixed-bloods actually came in two kinds.
One kind is predominantly human, carrying a trace of some other creature's blood in their veins. Such humans can still open a beast-taming space—like General Mu Huiyin, the Empress, and that three-eyed human from a moment ago.
The other kind is the reverse: the bloodline of a transcendent creature dominates, with only a small portion of human blood.
Together with creatures that have no human blood at all but closely resemble humans, they are collectively called humanoid-type beasts.
These beings possess no beast-taming space of their own, but they have a wide array of skills, and so can be contracted by beast tamers as beasts—making them something of an offbeat category, distinct from elemental, plant, undead, and mechanical types.
From what Shi Che knew, the merfolk of the ocean, the Dragon Maiden of Shenyuan City, the werewolves and vampires of the West, and even the legendary angels were all humanoid-type beings that could be contracted as beasts—though whether such tales were true or false, he could not say.
The mermaids were one thing; Lu Yan seemed to have contracted a mermaid princess, signing her for the exploration of undersea ruins. The rest, especially things like angels, were rather harder to judge true from false.
"Hurry up and eat," Xia Yan said, and Shi Jin promptly stuffed every last pastry into his mouth.
If his memory served, among the Thirteen Bureaus of Donghuang there was one established specifically for the mixed-blood human race, wasn't there?
From idle talk with Feng Jin, he had gathered that their overall combat strength was hardly weak.
...
When Shi Jin and the others arrived at the venue, a crowd had already gathered there.
But unlike the national tournament with its battle competitions, the breeding convention drew only industry insiders; the invitations went out to formidable beast tamers and breeders—you could not simply buy a ticket at the door and stroll in to watch.
So within the whole venue, counting the audience, there were probably no more than two thousand people—less imposing by far than some high school's pointless student-faculty assembly.
Over on the Ancient Capital University seats, Feng Jin, Hao Ling, and the others had long since been sitting and waiting, and several experts and professors from the university's breeding department had come as well.
This year Ancient Capital University had nothing to show for itself besides the evolved form of the Food-Iron Beast, so the research on the Green Worm Cocoon was a timely gift for them—without it, the breeding department would surely have ranked dead last again this year, or simply withdrawn from the competition.
"Let's head over."
