Chapter 1206 — Skimming Over the Wasteland

Blade of Dawn · Page 2 of 4

"Once you're in the new home, remember to spend plenty of time with them. If possible, let the other dragons at the embassy greet the wyrmlings, so they understand they live within a 'clan.' But don't let them see too many unfamiliar faces at once — they'll be confused, and it may even make it hard for them to distinguish their mother's scent..."

Enya patiently instructed the young Metzen point by point, and the latter listened while nodding earnestly. Gao You watched this scene quietly from the side, and a whole chain of déjà vu rose in his heart — until the lesson finally reached a pause, and he could not help but look toward Enya. "Didn't you say before that you had no practical experience raising wyrmlings...? How is it that you now seem quite knowledgeable on the subject?"

"I have no practical experience incubating eggs — nor could I possibly have any," Enya replied with indifference. "But I never said my theoretical knowledge was lacking — I remember a great many things from the age of the old ways of incubation!"

Gao Yang detected in the former Dragon God's tone a thick note of smugness and pride, but he couldn't shake the feeling that she wasn't telling the whole truth. After all, even if she retained some memories of the "gods" from the ancient era, those "theoretical" observations of the mortal world from a deity's vantage point shouldn't be detailed and thorough to this degree... This former Dragon God, when no one was looking, had surely found someone to tutor her, hadn't she?

But he would never say such a thing to her face. Considering it was no great matter, he merely smiled faintly and turned his gaze back to the two wyrmlings sleeping in each other's embrace. He saw the little ones burrow under the covers and shift into new positions, and a question suddenly occurred to him: "By the way, Metzen, have you thought of names for them yet?"

At this, Metzen's expression turned a little awkward, and after a moment's thought she shook her head. "Noreta and I discussed a few names earlier, but back then we never imagined the egg we brought back would have a double yolk — now there are two wyrmlings to name instead of one. I plan to talk it over with Noreta again once we're back. The names we had on the shortlist can be scrapped..."

Gao Yang said "Oh," and then saw the two wyrmlings begin squirming restlessly in their sleep again. One of them nuzzled and burrowed around her eggshell pillow for a good while, then suddenly opened her mouth and gave a cute little burp — a wisp of pale smoke curling slowly from the corner of her mouth.

A moment before, Gao Yang had been smiling; the instant he saw that wisp of smoke, his expression changed. He turned his head toward Metzen. "I think before we discuss anything else, we should first enchant all the flammable objects around these two little ones with fire protection..."

...

In the study of Cecil Palace, Virodai stood before the wide floor-to-ceiling window, platinum scepter in hand, her gaze fixed for a long while on the direction of the courtyard's main gate, as though lost in thought. Only when the sound of the door opening came from behind her did the "Saint Princess" turn around — and see Gao Song's figure stepping into the room.

"Your Majesty," Virodai said, a faint smile touching her lips as she gave a slight nod. "Good day."

"It's already evening," Gao Yang said, glancing at the sky outside. The sinking sun hung above the cluster of buildings at the city's edge, and the blazing crown of the great sun cast a faintly distorted veil of light across the clouds. "Sorry — I was delayed a while at the hatching chamber."

"It's no matter, and I haven't been waiting long," Virodai said with a smile. Then, with a touch of curiosity: "Has the dragon ambassador taken the two wyrmlings back?"
