Chapter 609 — Lowly
Blade of Dawn · Page 4 of 4
"You... will destroy... Ansu..."
"It is you who will destroy it—or rather, it is you all," Beiyila said, watching the prince before her with something near to pity. "Do you remember? This vortex—you are the one who opened it."
Edmund felt his reason dissipating at a furious pace; the murmuring whispers were rapidly stripping him of his capacity to think. He forced his mouth open and spoke almost by instinct: "I only... wanted to bring it... prosperity once more..."
Beiyila rose from the chair. She gazed quietly at the Prince of Ansu, who was on the verge of losing his own will, her eyes deep, her tone low: "Do you—do you truly understand what true prosperity is?"
A hazy veil of light covered Edmund's field of vision; his eyeballs were swiftly being remade by crystalline matter. In that alienated sight he could make out only Beiyila's eyes—deep and resolute, bearing a certain terrible fanaticism, yet also an incredible purity and reason.
He did not understand why a mad cultist would suddenly wear such a look.
That look reminded him of someone—someone who had returned to this world from the grave.
Before he lost his own will, he heard her final words:
"You have never truly lowered your head to look. To look once at those lowly people."
...
The "crystallized" attackers had all fallen, including that... person whose eyes had looked so familiar.
She had become a monster two meters tall, charged crystals mixed into swollen, twisted flesh—but Berke still recognized her.
She lay on the mist-veiled street, her body curled up, trembling faintly. This reminded Berke of seeing her in an alley not long ago—then too she had been curled up on the ground, curled up in the mud.
Berke walked slowly forward; the small wounds on his body sent sharp stings through him. Propping himself up on his longsword, he crouched down before the "laundress," bringing his head level with hers.
"Who did this to you? Those black-robed monsters as well?"
The crystallized woman made a hoarse sound, and amid a stretch of labored gasping Berke heard an answer he could not comprehend at all: "We... did it willingly, my lord."
The young marquis cried out in shock: "Why?!"
The "monster," whose human features were no longer discernible, lifted her head and said softly:
"Like this... eating stones is enough to live, my lord..."
