Chapter 588 — Restlessness

Blade of Dawn · Page 1 of 4

When Gao Yang woke from the brief dizziness and the illusion of spatial displacement, the first thing he saw was Amber's face planted right in front of his own.

With a somewhat helpless air, he pressed his palm against the half-elf's forehead and pushed her back a little: "Do you have to get this close every single time?"

Amber planted her hands on her hips and argued with perfect confidence: "I was bored, and you're the one who made me stay and keep an eye on you. Next time, pick someone else."

Gao Yang ignored the creature's muttering. He simply rose to his feet, stretched out his body, which had gone a little stiff from sitting so long, and then looked around.

This was a room with little in the way of decoration—wall panels of metal framework combined with wooden boards, a roof sheathed in sheet iron, furniture designed for easy assembly and transport arranged about the interior, together forming a style both plain and practical. Apart from the necessary desks, chairs, and bookcases, there was scarcely any superfluous furnishing to be seen. Not far off was a window covered with translucent resin; beyond it, faintly visible, stood the majestic Sentinel Tower upon the land.

This was "Spire Base," close by the Great Wall, and this room was where he rested and worked.

Gao Yang rolled his neck and asked casually, "Did anything happen while I was connected?"

"Suo Jilin came by once, to report on the sentry deployment. I had him leave the report on your desk. No one else came."

Gao Yan nodded and let out a breath: "Good... understood."

In his mind, he was recalling the new clues gleaned from the earlier network meeting.

The Society of the Final End possessed some kind of technology called the "Dark Bridge"... this technology was connected to the Great Wall; it could be used for communication, and it seemed it was not meant for ordinary occasions of contact...

Connecting this with Suo Jilin's earlier encounter—a high-ranking member of the Society of the Final End seemed to have been operating near the Great Wall; the other party had slipped into the communications center of the elven monitoring station... had their purpose been to use the "Dark Bridge"?

Some of those vines in the Shadow Realm were attached to the communication modules of the Sentinel Tower, and when those vines burned, it seemed the parts connected to the communication modules had suffered the first impact...

Amber blinked her eyes, watching Gao Yang fall into silence and thought the moment he woke from his "connected" state, and could not hold back her curiosity: "What happened?"

There was no need to hide such matters from Amber—this half-elf was herself an expert in intelligence and infiltration—so Gao Yang said bluntly: "Those vines in the Shadow Realm may be connected to something called the 'Dark Bridge.' It's a covert communication channel the Society of the Final End established inside the Great Wall... They didn't just use the vines to corrupt and tamper with part of the Great Wall's monitoring system; they even stole a portion of the Great Wall's functions."

Amber's face filled with astonishment at this: "They've been making that much trouble?"

"The history of the dark cults is as old as the human kingdoms; they were born in the same age as the Great Wall, so it's no wonder they can do such things," Gao Lan said. "What truly concerns me is this: they built such a special communication channel... to contact what, exactly?"

"Hm?" Amber did not grasp Gao Song's meaning for a moment. "What else would they contact? Their Ember Shadow cultists, obviously."
