Chapter 243 — The Returner

Blade of Dawn · Page 1 of 3

This was precisely why Gao Yang had brought Tyr here.

The process of the "identification procedure" on this particular piece of seafood had not gone quite as he had first imagined, but the result was still most satisfying.

"This thing and the giant squid are the same type of creature, even though their forms differ greatly," the siren girl had, after all, retained a basic measure of reason in the face of food, and still remembered—more or less—the task Gao Yang had assigned her. So the moment she finished her "appraisal" she scurried back, drooling as she reported, "They share the same high-energy reaction, and after the main body dies the organic tissue remains active... slurp... and it holds a natural attraction for sirens, who are elemental beings... slurp... and it's remarkably chewy... slurp..."

Gao Yang found he simply could not watch any longer. "How about you just slurp for a while first?"

"No need, no need," Tyr said, wiping her mouth vigorously. "I am very composed."

Having said that, the salted-fish spirit raised her head and made a valiant effort to shift her attention to something other than the "little snack."

She stared, somewhat dazed, at the severely warped metal wreckage drifting around the corpse of the Giant Deer Amoen. As an individual from Gao Yangming's society, she naturally held a rather uncommon understanding of such wondrous debris.

"This looks like a suicide-attack style assault," the siren lady speculated. "I found enormous lacerated wounds near the great white deer's spine, and there are fragments of metal wreckage inside those wounds as well. The two seem to have collided with tremendous force..."

"A suicide attack, is it..." Gao Qi frowned at the metal and crystal floating around the divine corpse, pondering what advantage these things might bring to his domain.

There was no doubt that these were artifacts of a technology far beyond the imagination of present-day humanity. Yet once the technological gap reaches a certain degree, the relics of Gao Yangming actually lose their value for study and reference to lower civilizations. Even the mighty Gondor Empire of old, with all its assembled elite, had only crudely imitated the energy reactions on this wreckage, thereby crafting a layer of protective barrier capable of withstanding the "will of the gods"—they had never grasped a single technical detail within this debris. So what could the Cecil Territory of today possibly learn from it?

It likely could not even cut through this metal—just like the fragments of the Eternal Slate, which every race of the present age believed to be the work of the gods, something no mortal could divide save by its own disintegration.

To sit and watch a mountain of treasure yet return empty-handed—such was probably Gao Yang's present state of mind.

"If only I were a Deepwater Technician," Tyr said, wagging the tip of her tail as though she too felt some regret. "Perhaps I could learn something from this wreckage... We sirens have observed every era of civilization on the continent, but we have never seen anything like this. This debris is truly... inconceivable."

Tyr seemed carefree and guileless, but at heart she was in fact cautious and sensitive. She knew she stood within an unfamiliar civilization, and as a special individual in this environment she had kept her words, deeds, and curiosity well in check. Even upon coming to this ancient fortress, seeing the so-called divine corpse and what appeared to be a god-slaying weapon, she had never acted too far out of line. Yet at this very moment she could not help but reveal her interest in the wreckage.

"This Deepwater Technician you speak of—could they analyze this wreckage?" Gao Yang had taken Tyr's words to heart and immediately turned to ask. "Could your technology parse this thing?"
