"Mengyan, it was Director Xiao from our department—she just called to tell me she wants me on a research project! It's an incredibly rare opportunity, of course I'm happy!" Zhou Yanning said excitedly. "I went to sign up this morning, but the person who received me said the project only takes graduate students or doctoral candidates, not undergraduates. Later the person who received me put in a word with the department on my behalf, and they said no as well. I'd assumed there was no hope, and then our department head calls me personally—I really was a little shocked!"
"Oh? Is that so!" Chen Shutang nodded. She knew how especially interested Zhou Yanning was in anything to do with computers, so she said, "Then congratulations indeed!"
"Yeah, I'll go report to her office in a bit," Zhou Yanning said with a nod.
"By the way, you said Director Xiao from your department?" Something seemed to occur to Chen Shutang, and she asked.
"Yes. What is it?" Zhou Yanning asked, seeing the somewhat odd expression on Chen Shutang's face.
"Hehe. I was just thinking—you were turned down before, and then afterwards you were allowed to join!" Chen Shutang covered her mouth and laughed.
"What is it? Mengyan, do you know the reason?" Zhou Yanning asked, rather puzzled.
"I—" Chen Shutang got halfway through before she suddenly noticed Jing Yu beside her and hastily shut her mouth. "I'll tell you later."
Jing Yu had naturally noticed too: Chen Shutang wanted to say something private, something only for her and her sisters to share among themselves. Jing Yu was still an outsider and couldn't be told. Though it left a slightly sour, unsettled feeling in her heart, she smiled understandingly all the same and said, "Jiajia, Mengyan, Zhiyun—I'll be going now. I have class this afternoon, so I need to get back to the dorm and get ready." Over the course of one lunch, Jing Yu had grown considerably more familiar with the three of them, and she was content. Things had to proceed step by step; she hadn't expected Chen Shutang and the others to accept her as one of their own just yet.
"Mm, then hurry along!" Chen Shutang, Zhou Yanning, and Lin Yanhe warmly said their goodbyes to Jing Yu.
