"You, still not satisfied? Actually, I've spent the most time with you. This past month I've practically slept at your place every single day." Seeing Wang Yanqiu feign innocence after getting the better of him, Yang Ce said helplessly.
"Wasn't that because you wanted to cultivate some 'rapport'?" Wang Yanqiu laughed, a sly laugh.
The two of them were staying in a detached villa with no one else around for miles, just like home—they could do whatever they pleased without worrying about appearances. And so the two of them resumed their former life of "cultivating rapport."
Huang Ce was already drunk on visions of future glory and gave no thought at all to the consequences. Right now his mind was filled with images of himself years later, returning home in silks and fine robes, the object of everyone's envy.
And indeed, if the gold mine turned a good profit and was worked properly, becoming the richest man in the city would be no difficult feat. Only after Huang Ce had steadied his emotions did he come out of the study.
He was afraid his family might notice something off about him—Huang Yan above all, whom he had to be especially careful around.
"Father, you're going out?" Huang Lin had already learned from Huang Yan that their father had asked for the money back. Instinct told Huang Lin that his father's change of heart had come a little too fast—so fast it was almost unbelievable.
"Yes, I'm going to the company," Huang Ce said, his expression normal.
"All right, then be careful out there." Though Huang Lin had his doubts, he could see nothing amiss, so he nodded and gave the reminder. Besides, he had no right to interfere in his father's affairs.
Huang Ce left the villa and did not dare call for the driver; instead he went to the garage himself, got the car, and drove toward the Li Group building. Li Shu had arranged to meet him at the company at four-thirty that afternoon.
He had not driven in a long time and felt rather rusty—waiting at a red light, he nearly failed to brake in time and almost rear-ended the car in front. Luckily the light turned green just then and the car ahead pulled away, so there was no accident.
Otherwise, if there really had been an accident, it would surely have drawn the attention of Huang Rongtian and the others, and his plan might well have fallen through.
This time Huang Ce drove with great care, not daring to be the least bit careless, and at last he safely parked the car in the Li Group parking lot. Only then did he breathe a sigh of relief.
Had he known it would be this much trouble, he might as well have taken a taxi, Huang Ce thought with some irritation.
"Good day, Mr. Huang." The Li Group gate guard had long since received Li Shu's instructions and was there to greet Huang Ce. Though a swindle was in the works, the surface formalities still had to be observed properly.
"You know me?" Huang Ce was rather surprised. This was his first visit to the Li Group; he had not expected the security guard here to recognize him.
"Heh, the chairman personally arranged for me to welcome you here. I've seen your photograph at the chairman's office," the guard said respectfully.
"Is that so." This feeling of being valued delighted Huang Ce, and his step grew all the more buoyant. "Lead the way, then. I'll go see your chairman, Mr. Li."
"Very good, Mr. Huang. Please follow me." The guard gave Huang Ce a polite nod and led him toward the elevators.
They boarded the elevator for the private access route, rising straight to the very top floor of the tower, to the chairman's office.
"This way, please, Mr. Huang." The guard led Huang Ce to the door of an office, then bowed. "You may go in."
Huang Ce nodded, stepped forward, and knocked on the door. Li Shu's voice came from within: "Who is it? Come in."
Huang Ce pushed open the door and walked in. Seeing it was Huang Ce, Li Shu hurriedly rose to his feet. "Mr. Huang, you've come! Welcome, welcome."
