Lu Xueling's brows knitted. She turned to look at her master, Master Shuijing, and saw that Master Shuijing's delicate brows had also drawn together, her gaze traveling toward Daoist Daoyan. Daoist Daoyan looked back at her, a question in his eyes.
Master Shuijing sighed inwardly and said mildly to Lu Xueling, "Since the Sect Master Uncle has given the order, and you are fairly well acquainted with him, Qi'er, it would be well for you to show him around."
Lu Xueling's lips moved. She slowly lowered her head, and after a moment said in a low voice, "Yes, this disciple respectfully obeys her master's command."
Li Xun was overjoyed beyond measure, though he kept a smile on his face as he said to Lu Xueling, "Then I shall trouble you, junior sister."
Lu Xueling nodded slightly, and no other expression showed on her face.
From his seat, Daoist Daoyan nodded with a smile. Nearby, Zeng Shuchang and Tian Buhui glanced over but said nothing. It was Tian Buhui's wife, Su Wan, who, in the midst of her conversation with her daughter Tian Lingsu, cast a glance in that direction, and her brows knitted slightly.
The gathering did not disperse until much later. Tian Buhui led his wife Su Wan and his eldest disciple Song Dayi out of the Jade Balance Hall of Heaven-Reaching Peak. Song Dayi followed his master out, yet could not resist stealing a glance back over his shoulder.
That gesture fell into the eyes of Tian Lingsu, who had come out together with them to see her father and mother off, and she suddenly burst into a giggle.
Hearing the laughter, both Tian Buhui and Su Wan turned back. Su Wan glanced at her daughter and said with a smile, "What are you laughing at?"
Tian Lingsu walked to her mother's side, took Su Wan's hand, and shot a glance at her eldest senior brother. Song Dayi, with a guilty conscience, instantly flushed red to the ears.
Tian Buhui gave a humph and said, "Playing tricks and acting mysterious—what is it?"
Tian Lingsu said with a smile, "Father, Mother, you had better hurry and go to Little Bamboo Peak on eldest senior brother's behalf to ask Uncle Shuiyue for a marriage proposal, or he really will die of anxiety."
Tian Buhui was stunned. Su Wan, however, was far quicker of mind than her husband and had already caught on. She said to Song Dayi with a smile, "What, so you already have someone in your heart, and she is a disciple of my senior sister Shuiyue at Little Bamboo Peak? Come, tell your master's wife, and I shall make the decision for you."
Song Dayi opened his mouth to speak, but when he glanced at Tian Buhui, he found he could say nothing at all, and could only lower his head. Su Wan was taken aback and said, "What is it, Daren?"
Tian Lingsu giggled and said, "Eldest senior brother is just afraid Father will scold him. Let me say it for him..."
Song Dayi grew nervous and opened his mouth. "Little junior sister, you..."
Tian Lingsu paid him no mind and went on of her own accord to Su Wan, "The one eldest senior brother has set his heart on is none other than Senior Sister Wen Pei, a disciple of Uncle Shuiyue."
Tian Buhui gave another snort from the side, his face twisted into a sour, sardonic expression, but Su Wan laughed aloud and said, "Well, well, you've got a keen eye in you after all. That girl Wenpei is certainly fine enough, though whether she's of a mind herself is still hard to say. I can't very well just go and—"
Song Dayi's heart leaped in alarm, and he lifted his head. "She—she feels the same way too..."
Before the words were out of his mouth, he saw his master, his mistress, and his young junior sister all looking at him at once, their faces wearing expressions that hovered between a smile and something else, and he faltered into silence, abashed, and could only lower his head again.
Su Wan shook her head with a rueful smile. "Enough, enough. You rascal, you've inherited your master's eye for quality, so why couldn't you have inherited his thick skin along with it..."
