Chapter 4920 — Is There Any or Not
"Xinyan! Xiaotao!" Wei Zhao hurried forward to meet them, a swell of emotion rising in his chest. If not for that infernal thing being able to restrain the vengeful spirit's primal soul, he would have been trapped alive in the City of Thunder Burials this time, never to see these lovely ladies again.
"Are you all right?" Wang Xinyan and Huang Xiaotao examined Wei Zhao from head to toe. Seeing that he had only a few minor injuries, nothing serious, they finally put their hearts back in their bellies. The very word "thunder burial" was simply too frightening—all this time apart, the two of them had been on tenterhooks for Wei Zhao's sake.
"I'm fine. See, perfectly well, aren't I?" Wei Zhao chuckled, saying not a word about the vengeful spirit's primal soul, lest the two girls worry themselves sick over nothing.
"Huh, Miss Ni, how did you come back?" Only then did Wang Xinyan and Huang Xiaotao notice Ni Caiyue at his side, and they exchanged a startled glance.
"Whoa, Master Lin, you really are a dragon among men—snagging this Third Fairy in such a short time!" The first words out of the late-arriving Lu Xiaozhong's mouth turned Ni Caiyue bright red.
"No no no! He didn't snag me, it was me... it was me..." Ni Caiyue waved her hands frantically in panic.
"Then it was you who snagged Master Lin?" Lu Xiaozhong slapped his thigh, struck with sudden enlightenment. "Heh heh, no wonder you two got together so fast. As the saying goes, when a woman chases a man, there's only a layer of gauze between them—poke it and it's through!"
"Huh? What do you mean, poke it and it's through? I didn't poke anything..." Ni Caiyue said, her face burning red. Though she wore a veil, even the roots of her ears had gone crimson.
"Then was it Master Lin who did the poking?" Lu Xiaozhong's gossiping soul was blazing like a bonfire; his gaze traveled back and forth between Wei Zhao and Ni Caiyue as he dug to the bottom of it.
"Enough, enough, what's all this poking and not poking, where has the conversation even gone!" Wei Zhao felt his head swell listening to it. Little Ni girl's useless-teammate trait was a real menace—nothing had happened at all, yet with her muddled answers, anyone would think there was something fishy going on. Even Wang Xinyan and Huang Xiaotao now wore teasing looks in their eyes. If he let them keep guessing wildly like this, they'd have the rice cooked into a meal before long.
"Exactly, exactly. Nothing happened between us at all. I didn't poke him, and he didn't poke me!" Ni Caiyue huffed, setting the record straight for herself.
Aiya! Wei Zhao nearly spat out a mouthful of old blood at that. What did they call it—the more you try to explain, the blacker it gets? Well, this was exactly what the more you try to explain, the blacker it gets meant!
"You be quiet. Let me talk!" Wei Zhao simply couldn't bear the crowd's meaningful stares, so he had to explain himself. "This girl was being chased by two of Chang Laiting's lackeys and fled back to this place to call for help. She happened to run into me, so I stepped in and got her out of trouble. Afterward she didn't dare leave alone, which is why she's come along with me."
"Right, right, that's exactly it, so neither of us poked the other!" Ni Caiyue's useless-teammate halo was everywhere. Wei Zhao could only stare speechlessly at the heavens. Fortunately, everyone had by now grasped the ins and outs of the matter, and they all looked at one another, caught between laughter and tears.
"All right, did you come back with anything from down there?" Wang Xinyan promptly changed the subject. Though she knew there was nothing between the two, she could not let Ni Caiyue keep digging herself deeper like that—otherwise the rice really would cook into a meal.
"Nothing. A mass grave, not even a blade of grass to be seen, let alone the Nourishing Mystic Grass." Wei Zhao shook his head with a bitter smile. Then he asked, "How about all of you?"
"We didn't find the Nourishing Mystic Grass either. Fortunately we gathered some rather valuable spirit herbs—better than nothing, I suppose," Wang Xinyan and the others said, shaking their heads.
All in all, among the whole group, only Ni Caiyue had found the Nourishing Mystic Grass. Whether to call this girl's luck off the charts, or to say fools have fool's fortune, was hard to say.
The result was truly hard to swallow, but Wei Zhao and Wang Xinyan and the others could do nothing about it. Such rare heavenly treasures were simply like that—only the fated could obtain them, and otherwise no amount of strength availed.
"Since that's the case, there's no need for us to keep forcing it. Let's go back," Wei Zhao decided. Though there was still some time left before the month was up, and he could, if unwilling to give up, still lead everyone to try their luck around the area, the chances were slim—staying here would mostly be a waste of time.
"All right." Wang Xinyan and the others naturally had no objections and nodded one after another.
"You went down to the Land of Thunder Burials? Is there really no Nourishing Mystic Grass down there? Wasn't it said to be everywhere?" Only now did Ni Caiyue finally react, and she pressed Wei Zhao eagerly for an answer.
Wei Zhao gave her a helpless look. By now he had figured it out: the claim that the Land of Thunder Burials abounded in Nourishing Mystic Grass was nothing but a rumor passed from mouth to mouth. Most likely the person who first spread it had never even been down into the basin—simply because Nourishing Mystic Grass occasionally appeared nearby, they had taken it for granted that there must be even more below. In truth, it was purely a beautiful misunderstanding.
"Is there any or not?" Ni Caiyue pressed.
"There's your sister!" Wei Zhao shot her an exasperated glare.
"Huh? I don't have a sister..." Ni Caiyue stared blankly for a moment, then her face suddenly flushed. "Eek! You can't mean... that place of mine... Young hero... you're teasing me again!"
"What on earth are you talking about?" Wei Zhao looked at her, utterly baffled, not understanding in the least what this little Ni girl meant. But then he saw her nervously covering her lower parts, and he understood at once. He glared at her speechlessly. "I'll screw your sister too!"
"You... you really are a pervert!" Ni Caiyue retreated several steps in fright, pointing at Wei Zhao huffily, looking for all the world as though she might turn and flee at any moment.
"You're the pervert! Your whole family are perverts!" Wei Zhao was nearly struck dumb with fury by this silly girl. They all had human heads, so how could hers have such a gaping hole in it!
"My whole family are not perverts!" Ni Caiyue huffed, craning her neck stubbornly. After thinking it over a while, she felt something was off, and hastily added, "I'm not a pervert either!"
Wang Xinyan and Huang Xiaotao could not help but laugh at the sight. Wei Zhao, ever calm and composed, was again and again driven to distraction by this adorably foolish Ni Caiyue—truly a rare sight to behold.
Wei Zhao was indeed choked speechless by this girl, and could only smack his forehead. "I really am asking for it, getting into a war of words with a silly girl like you..."
"I'm not a silly girl, my name is Ni Caiyue!" Ni Caiyue clarified with an earnest face.
"Fine, fine, fine, you're not a silly girl, I am, all right? I truly surrender to you," Wei Zhao said, raising his hands in helpless surrender. (To be continued.)
