Chapter 3611 — Perhaps My Luck Has Always Been Good
"What? Ten or eight pieces a day?" Lu Bianren and Miserable Senior Brother were both startled, staring at each other in disbelief.
Both of them had once surveyed Number Ten mining zone, and they knew exactly what it was like in there. Fine jade was pure wishful thinking; digging up a dozen or twenty pieces of waste jade a day was already cause to burn incense in gratitude. And so, to avoid upsetting Wei Zhao, Miserable Senior Brother had not even dared come ask him how things were going these past two days, fearing that, just as he had predicted, the man had gone two days without a single piece of fine jade—which would only make things awkward for both of them.
"Heh, I was surprised too, but it may be that the spot Senior Brother Ku picked out for me is a rare high-quality vein that yields a good deal of fine jade. So neither of you need trouble yourselves or worry over my affairs any longer," Wei Zhao said with a smile. Of course he would not reveal his hand; offering up this business of a high-quality vein was reason enough—and no doubt Meng Jueming and his lot had arrived at the same conclusion.
"Is that so? That spot has plenty of waste jade that looks like fine jade, sure, but I've scarcely seen a few pieces of true fine jade there," Miserable Senior Brother said, utterly bewildered. The spot he had found for Wei Zhao was indeed a rare, high-yield one within the Number Ten dead mining zone, but ten or eight pieces of fine jade a day was far too outrageous. He had helped Wei Zhao dig several pieces himself back then and had never once stumbled on such good fortune.
"That... may be because Senior Brother Ku didn't dig deep enough back then, and now your junior brother has reaped the benefit," Wei Zhao was forced to patch his lie.
"That's certainly possible. Perhaps your spot lies rather deep and connects with the veins of those high-quality mining zones," Lu Bianren nodded, then breathed a sigh of relief. "In any case, if you can keep pulling out fine jade, then these three months won't have been wasted for you—that's a fine thing indeed." Miserable Senior Brother, once he had grasped it, grew excited as well. "Ten or eight pieces a day—then over three months, Junior Brother Lin, you ought to make seven or eight spirit jades, which will be of great benefit to your cultivation later on!"
Seven or eight spirit jades? My goal is a hundred and forty! At two a day, that's a hundred and forty over three months at the very least! Wei Zhao laughed to himself, though his face kept nodding along. In truth, for a newcomer, seven or eight spirit jades was already no small sum.
"Since Junior Brother Lin's situation here is tolerable, we can set our minds at ease. If anything comes up in the future, feel free to speak to Junior Brother Ku, or come find me at the Cliff of Reflection. It's getting late—we'll take our leave first." Lu Bianren gave a word of parting, and he and Miserable Senior Brother departed together.
After seeing the two off, Wei Zhao was just about to turn back into his cave dwelling when he saw two more people walking toward him from afar, even raising a hand in greeting. It was Meng Jueming and Meng Zhou. Wei Zhao could not help but be amused. What day was it today, that everyone under the sun should come looking for him?
He had no fondness for these two, but Meng Jueming was, after all, the managing senior brother, and Wei Zhao could hardly pretend not to see him. He simply halted and waited for the two to approach. "Senior Brother Meng, what instructions might you have for me?"
Drawing near, Meng Jueming had Meng Zhou shoo the newcomers who had poked their heads out to watch back into their caves, while he himself led Wei Zhao to a quiet corner. Only then did he speak. "Junior Brother Wei Zhao, there was a bit of a misunderstanding between us, and so in a fit of anger I assigned you to the Number Ten dead mining zone. I was not honorable in doing so, and I admit it. But I have thought it through now: there is no deep grudge between us. You are a newcomer to the Qingyun Pavilion, and I am its managing senior brother—there is simply no reason for us to let relations grow so strained, wouldn't you agree?"
Eh? What sort of reasoning is this? Has Meng Jueming taken leave of his senses? Is this the prelude to a reconciliation? But Wei Zhao did not believe for a moment that he was so kind-hearted!
And so, hearing these words, Wei Zhao gave a noncommittal nod, while inwardly wondering: what play is this senior brother putting on? Given Meng Jueming's consistently hard and domineering manner, there was no reason for him to come say such things of his own accord. Wei Zhao refused to believe this creature truly wished to make peace with him—unless the sun rose in the west. There must be something fishy here!
Seeing Wei Zhao's expression, Meng Jueming chuckled. "I know you don't believe me, Junior Brother Wei Zhao, but that's no matter. To judge whether my words are sincere, you need only watch what I do next. To show my apology, and to show my sincerity, I have decided to move you to Number Seven mining zone. What do you say?"
"Move me to Number Seven mining zone?" Wei Zhao was instantly enlightened. So this was the point all along! This creature had not come to reconcile at all—he had plainly grown restless at seeing Wei Zhao pull ten or eight pieces of fine jade two days running!
"Exactly. You've been in the Number Ten dead mining zone two days now, Junior Brother Wei Zhao, and you must have a clear picture of what it's like in there. Never mind that your luck has been good these two days and you've dug out a few pieces of fine jade—over the long run, you can't possibly enjoy such luck every day, can you? As for yield, Number Seven mining zone may not be any great mining zone, but compared with the Number Ten dead mining zone, it's vastly better!" Meng Jueming exhorted him earnestly.
"Perhaps my luck has always been this good?" Wei Zhao raised an eyebrow and looked at him, then asked with a faint smile, "You've heard it too, haven't you? They all say it was only through a burst of tremendous luck that I climbed from a lone cultivator to Cloud Terrace Island!"
"Hmph. Luck for a time, that I can understand—but have you ever seen anyone who was lucky all his life? After all these years, your store of luck is probably about used up!" Meng Jueming's face turned cold at once, and he curled his lip. "You know Pavilion Master Lu and Junior Brother Ku, don't you? The two of them once had tremendous luck as well and caught the eye of a vice pavilion master of our Qingyun Pavilion. Not only did they enjoy abundant cultivation resources, but both were promoted. And now? Their patron, that vice pavilion master, went off on a mission, and whether he lives or dies is unknown—not a word has come back. So their luck has run out! That is why a man must not put too much faith in luck. Ah, yes—speaking of those two, I saw Pavilion Master Lu and Miserable Junior Brother on my way here. You must know by now that this afternoon the two of them tried to get Dai Wuchang to move you to another mining zone, and in the end it didn't happen because of Young Master Xu, no?"
"Oh, is that so!" Wei Zhao nodded, his gaze still placid. "I had heard about the transfer as well."
