Chapter 2668 — I Do Not Mind
Yet Wei Zhao's behavior made Yu Xiaoke frown. She thought to herself, was Wei Zhao really so utterly without a sense of propriety as to sit on a young woman's bed? Did he not know what it meant to keep one's distance?
"This is the check for this round of school donations. Since I was coming anyway, I brought it straight over." Wei Zhao handed a check to Yu Xiaoke and then said, "You can just take it to the bank and transfer it."
"Thank you..." Wei Zhao had come to deliver a check, so Yu Xiaoke could hardly say much else. She had no choice but to take the check, turning a blind eye to his sitting on her bed. Her brother would soon be laying everything out plainly to him anyway; another moment or two hardly mattered.
"Ha ha, I came only to bring you the check. Since there's nothing else, I'll be on my way. Yu Dake, are you coming back with me, or staying here?" Wei Zhao asked.
"I'll go back with you." For one thing, Yu Dake had a task from Yu Xiaoke; for another, as a retainer of the Hidden Right Clan, it would not do for him to be away too long.
"Good, then let's go. Xiaoke, call me anytime if anything comes up." Wei Zhao bade Yu Xiaoke farewell.
"All right." Since matters were about to be settled, Yu Xiaoke was not as cold to Wei Zhao this time, and for the first time in memory, she waved him off.
Wei Zhao, knowing nothing of the reason, assumed that Yu Xiaoke's monthly troubles had passed and she was back to her normal self.
He went downstairs with Yu Dake and got into the car. Wei Zhao asked, "Well? Did Xiaoke believe your story about who you are?"
"Yes, she believed it." Yu Dake nodded, then cupped his hands in solemn salute. "For this matter, I thank you, Mr. Lin. Had it not been for you, my sister and I would not merely have failed to meet—we would long since have been parted by death!"
"Ha ha, that's putting it a bit strongly. I need to go pick up some clothes for Yaoyao and the others. Will you come with me, or...?" Wei Zhao asked.
"I'll come along," Yu Dake said. "As it happens, there's something I'd like to discuss with you, Mr. Lin."
"Fine, go ahead." Wei Zhao started the car and headed in the direction of the Seaview Bay villa district.
"Mr. Lin, you saved my life, you brought me and my sister together, and you have gone to such lengths for my sister's orphanage. My sister and I will keep all these kindnesses engraved on our hearts. One day, be it as beasts of burden or as attendants at your side, we will surely repay you!" Yu Dake said with great solemnity.
"There's no need for that. I've told you, it was a matter of lifting a finger, and as for Yu Xiaoke's orphanage, that is entirely a private matter between her and me, having nothing to do with you. You needn't take it so much to heart..." Wei Zhao said indifferently.
But Wei Zhao's words made Yu Dake's expression change at once! Sure enough, Wei Zhao was fond of Yu Xiaoke—otherwise he could not have spoken of a private matter. It seemed Yu Xiaoke's guess had been right after all! At this thought, Yu Dake could not help but sigh. Yet however hard it was, he had to speak. Otherwise he would fail the trust Yu Xiaoke had placed in him.
With that in mind, Yu Dake steeled himself and said, "Mr. Lin, do you like my sister?"
"Hm?" Wei Zhao was slightly taken aback, unsure how to answer. If it had been before, he truly had not liked Yu Xiaoke—at most he felt some goodwill toward her. But after that time she had prepared to storm the execution ground, Wei Zhao had begun to develop feelings for her; and then, in the **market, Wei Zhao's heart had truly come to hold Yu Xiaoke. So to say he did not like her would be a joke—but to say he did, which identity of his was it that liked her?
Seeing that Wei Zhao did not answer, Yu Dake grew all the more certain, and hurried on: "Mr. Lin, the truth is... my sister already has someone in her heart. If you have feelings for her, then... I know you are the great benefactor of my sister and me, but matters of the heart cannot be forced... We will repay you in other ways!"
"Hm? She has someone in her heart? Who?" Wei Zhao asked instinctively. He had not expected Yu Xiaoke to have a change of heart so quickly.
"A man called Malevolence..." Yu Dake said. "My sister has already fallen deeply in love with this man, and so..."
"Pff... cough, cough..." Only then did Wei Zhao understand—he had been too hasty, his concern clouding his judgment. On reflection, Malevolence and Wei Zhao were, to Yu Xiaoke, two different people. Wei Zhao knew the truth of his identities, but Yu Xiaoke did not. It seemed she had seen how well he treated her, drawn the wrong conclusion, and sent Yu Dake to plead on her behalf!
At this thought, Wei Zhao felt both amused and helpless, yet also found it a little entertaining. A mischievous streak awoke in him, and he wanted to keep teasing Yu Xiaoke in the guise of Wei Zhao! In the past, Wei Zhao would never have done anything so idle, but now that he had feelings for Yu Xiaoke as well, he hardly minded joking with her.
"What is it, Mr. Lin?" Seeing Wei Zhao suddenly cough, Yu Dake was startled, thinking Wei Zhao's heart had been badly wounded. He hurriedly said, "Mr. Lin, I... I did not mean to hurt you. I only meant to say that a short pain is better than a long one..."
"Ha!" After his coughing fit, Wei Zhao suddenly laughed, looking at Yu Dake with a strange expression. "Who says I'm heartbroken? I was only thinking... never mind. That Malevolence is no stronger than I am—at most our strength is equal. I still have a chance!"
"This..." Seeing Wei Zhao refuse to budge, Yu Dake felt somewhat helpless, yet he could hardly press him too hard. After all, Wei Zhao was his benefactor, and having said this much, to say more would be unseemly.
"You needn't concern yourself with this matter. I don't want you mixed up in it—though you are Xiaoke's brother, you have only just been reunited with her," Wei Zhao said, glancing at Yu Dake.
"This... very well..." What else could Yu Dake say? He could only nod reluctantly. Wei Zhao had spoken thus; to interfere further would be to presume too much. It seemed he would have to leave Wei Zhao and Yu Xiaoke to settle it themselves. Still, he offered one last warning: "Xiaoke said just now that if you insist on this, Mr. Lin, then even if she went with you, she might still stray..."
"What?" Wei Zhao was stunned.
"She meant she might stray in her heart..." Yu Dake clarified.
"Oh, she likes Malevolence, does she? That's all right. If she likes him, so be it—I do not mind," Wei Zhao nodded and said. "In fact, even if she strayed with Malevolence in body, it would be all right. I do not mind that either..."
"Hah!?" This time it was Yu Dake's turn to be stunned. Was Wei Zhao serious? Why did it sound so bizarre? Yu Dake did not understand, but he could not bring himself to ask further, and so he shut his mouth.
