Chapter 687 — Ruining a Good Thing
In Tang Zhi's eyes, the rival she faced now was the eldest Miss; as for Guan Xin, she did not seem to count as a rival at all.
Guan Xin finished preparing the medicine for several wards and delivered it herself. Only after she returned to the nurses' duty room did she say to Kang Xiaofeng and the others, "I'm done with my work. I can take Xiaofen for her follow-up now."
"All right, shall we go now, then?" Kang Xiaofeng rose to his feet.
"No need. I'll just take Xiaofen myself; you don't have to come along." Guan Xin did not want Kang Xiaofeng to tag along. Xiaofen's mental illness had been brought on by another man, and the doctor would likely ask some sensitive questions during the follow-up — questions that would be awkward for Kang Xiaofeng to hear, and awkward for them both. With that in mind, Guan Xin had decided not to bring him.
"Then... that works too. Sorry for the trouble!" Kang Xiaofeng was no fool. Seeing the look on Guan Xin's face, he had guessed something of what was going on, and so did not insist.
In her heart, Xiaofen was grateful for Guan Xin's thoughtfulness. She did not want Kang Xiaofeng to come either — to get a full picture of her condition, the doctor sometimes asked questions that were deeply embarrassing, going so far as to ask how many times she had slept with Kang Jingming. Such things truly could not be allowed to reach Kang Xiaofeng's ears.
Tang Zhi sensed Guan Xin's thoughtfulness too. A girl like that could hardly help drawing a boy's affection — but what was she to do? She could hardly ask Wei Zhao not to see her, could she? Tang Zhi was torn! It had taken her so long to finally open her heart, so why did everything have to be so bumpy?
She had assumed that with her looks, finding a boy who would care for her wholeheartedly would not be difficult. And that much had come true — he did care for her — but not one of the girls around him was inferior to her; on a holistic reckoning, some were even stronger. Tang Zhi truly did not know how to cope with it. She had not the slightest experience in such things.
Watching Guan Xin's departing back, Tang Zhi gave a soft sigh. Why was her luck so wretched? Every rival was so formidable — was she not even to be granted peace of mind?
Liu Xinlan caught the dejection in Tang Zhi's mood and patted her on the shoulder. "What's this? Getting all knotted up again?"
"Me? As if." How could Tang Zhi ever admit it? Before her good friend, how could she show weakness?
"As if nothing's wrong. Ever since I saw Guan Xin, I've felt something's off with you." Liu Xinlan knew Tang Zhi quite well. "Say, Yunyun — how far have you and Wei Zhao gotten, really? Give me the truth."
"How far could we have gotten? We're only high schoolers, all right? Holding hands at most, I suppose?" Tang Zhi was a little bashful, though she blamed the lack of progress between her and Wei Zhao on the simple fact that they were still in school.
"High school? People are sleeping together in middle school! Yunyun, are you even keeping up? Have you ever been on the internet? The other day at Fatty Lai's place you were talking such a vivid game — so it was all a bluff!" Liu Xinlan was somewhat disappointed.
"Aren't they bluffing too? I refuse to believe they'd dare do that threesome thing with Wei Zhao!" Tang Zhi felt a little wronged. If not for Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu, would she ever have said so many shameless things?
"Gu Mengyao, hard to say. But that Shen Yushu — her, maybe. The way she looked, she seemed all too eager to try!" Liu Xinlan was a good judge of character. "Let me tell you, Yunyun, you'd better keep a close eye on Wei Zhao, or when the time comes you won't even find a place to cry."
"If he wants to be with someone else, how could I stop him?" Tang Zhi shook her head, full of bewilderment about the future.
"You — there's just no talking to you. With that temperament of yours, you'll suffer for it sooner or later. By the time someone's sleeping with Wei Zhao, you probably won't even know it!" Liu Xinlan was helpless with her, frustrated that she would not fight for what she wanted.
"If he likes sleeping around, what am I supposed to do about it?" Tang Zhi seemed to be asking Liu Xinlan, and yet also asking herself. But once the question was out, she shook her head again. Never mind. These things were too vexing!
While the two of them chatted, Kang Xiaofeng could get a word in edgewise, and could only sit to one side pretending not to hear.
This was the great The Blossom Guardian Tang! Kang Xiaofeng had never imagined that even the great The Blossom Guardian Tang could fret over gains and losses for a man. The boss was truly incredible!
Zhu Xiaozhang registered Kang Jingming downstairs, then hurried off to the outpatient clinic, where Wang Shubin and Kang Jingming were already waiting.
The hospital had a great many people registering, but Zhu Xiaozhang was a force to be reckoned with — he cut straight to the front. When people called him out on it, he glared and threatened to hit them, which shut his critics up quickly enough! After all, Zhu Xiaozhang was fat-headed, big-eared, and tall as a tower — who would want to provoke him? If he wanted to cut the line, let him cut it...
Zhu Xiaozhang felt no shame at all — quite the opposite, he took pride in it. Only this way, he felt, was he worthy of the title "Brother Arrogant."
Kang Jingming saw the doctor. His ailment was in fact quite simple — an ordinary cold brought on by wind and chill. The doctor prescribed him medicine, but Kang Jingming insisted on being hospitalized.
In fact, his illness was one that could go either way — hospitalization or not — but the doctor, seeing how severe his fever was and how insistently the young man demanded to be admitted, went ahead and wrote him a three-day stay. Kang Jingming was a rich young master, after all, and the doctor had no intention of saving him money.
Medical order in hand, Kang Jingming went off in high delight to find Guan Xin for his injection, which turned out to be quite an ordeal for him. In truth, with that order he could have found someone to give him a shot at any general surgery nurses' duty room or treatment room, but since he had come for Guan Xin and Guan Xin alone, naturally he wanted her.
"Young Master Ming, hold on! We're nearly at Guan Xin's floor — just a little longer..." Wang Shubin saw that Kang Jingming's fever had turned his legs to jelly and he could barely walk steady, and hurriedly cheered him on.
"Right, I'll hold on!" Kang Jingming gritted his teeth and finally made it up the stairs. Just as he was about to reach Guan Xin's nurses' duty room, he saw Guan Xin come out of it together with a young woman — and the sight of the girl beside Guan Xin made Kang Jingming freeze; instinctively he stopped in his tracks.
"Young Master Ming, isn't that Xiaofen, the little tramp? What's she doing with Guan Xin?" Zhu Xiaozhang had seen Xiaofen and Guan Xin come out together as well, and now he was puzzled too.
"Yeah, how could she know Guan Xin?" Wang Shubin was equally baffled.
"Damn, I remember now — Kang Xiaofeng seemed to know Guan Xuewen last time, so it's no wonder Xiaofen knows Guan Xuewen's granddaughter!" For once Kang Jingming's mind had actually worked, only to guess wrong. Xiaofen and Guan Xin had not met through Guan Xuewen at all.
"Makes sense!" Zhu Xiaozhang nodded. "But now we're in trouble — do we go over or not?"
"That little tramp, always ruining my good plans — she deserves to die! Why didn't I run her over back then?" Kang Jingming said viciously. "There's no way I can go over now! If Guan Xin finds out about me and Xiaofen, what chance would I have of courting her?"
