Chapter 245 — Camille's New Life

Here he paused, and a hint of amusement seemed to enter his voice: "What surprises me more than the changes of this era is the new liege lord I have sworn myself to... that you, too, are a returned ancient. Now that is truly astonishing."
While in the Shadow Realm, Camille had not known of Gao Yang's origins, taking him merely for an ordinary human lord. It was only after seeing the light of day again and arriving at this manor that he heard from the ever-familiar Rebecca the tale of the "Mystic Vein Sect rising from their coffins." The unbelievable story had astonished him greatly, but as a "Remade" whose very existence challenged conventional wisdom, Camille accepted Gao Yang's resurrection from the coffin rather quickly.
He could only sigh at the strangeness of fate — even rising from coffins, it seemed, could come in successive waves.
Gao Yang thought to himself that he had done a good deal more than simply crawl out of a coffin — he had hung up in the sky for eight hundred thousand years before that. These secrets that defied all common sense would take forever to explain, so he laughed heartily and steered the conversation past them: "Haha, this world sometimes needs a few miracles. I've already arranged quarters for you — for the time being, why not stay here in this manor? There are plenty of empty rooms."
"If I won't be a bother," Camille said politely. "Though if the opportunity arises in the future, I would still like to build a mage tower for research and residence. Of course, I'll find my own means. I adapt better in a familiar environment."
"Heddy has always wanted a mage tower of her own as well," Gao Yang couldn't help glancing at Heddy, who looked slightly embarrassed, and nodded with a smile. "There will be opportunities. More and more mages will appear in the territory, and one day I intend to set aside a dedicated mage district."
After explaining a few household matters and learning of Camille's special living requirements, Gao Yang offered him a suggestion: "As for how to adapt to this unfamiliar world, I suggest you look up Nicholas Egg of the Mechanical Workshop. He shares a form of life that humans can scarcely imagine, and he has already adapted completely to life in this era. Moreover, he has... some connection, more or less, to the Fortress of Defiance of a thousand years ago. I imagine the two of you will have something in common to talk about."
"A connection to the Fortress of Defiance?" Camille was immediately filled with keen interest in this future colleague of his with the peculiar name. "Very well, I shall go and see him."
After Camille left, only Gao Yang and two great-great-great-...-granddaughters remained in the room.
"Rebecca, you were truly rude just now," Heddy said, looking helplessly at the girl with the iron skull, who still wore an innocent expression and seemed to want nothing more than to chase after Camille and continue her study of him. "However curious you may be, you should never be so disrespectful to a new guest — especially when that guest is an ancient archmage who has lived a thousand years. As a mage, you ought to show him respect."
"I was curious about the runes on his armor plates," Rebecca said, pouting with an aggrieved air. "Lately I've been working with Jenny all day on optimized algorithms for traditional magic arrays, and the moment I see anything rune-like I instinctively want to study it..."
"The Gondor Empire conducted extremely profound research into runes and magic arrays. Though many ancient arrays have lost their function in the present day owing to the collapse of the Deep Blue Mana Well, their understanding of runes still far surpasses that of modern people," Gao Yang said, looking at Rebecca. "Camille's knowledge and experience, combined with the logic and mathematics you have been studying, will — I believe — push the work of rune research forward by a great stride."
