Chapter 3917 — The Ghost Thing Strikes

The Blossom Guardian · Page 2 of 2

The Faceless Puppet froze. Instinctively it wanted to strike out and destroy Wei Zhao, but under the terror of the Ghost Thing's pressure it dared not make any move at all. It could only watch as Wei Zhao walked over step by step and took the ten-thousand-year tree crystal from its body.

One ten-thousand-year tree crystal, two thousand-year tree crystals, plus a fight with the Mirror Puppet—Wei Zhao's haul from this trip was, frankly, absurdly rich.

That done, Wei Zhao turned and climbed the hollow wall bare-handed. This place was at the bottom of a lake, and the only way out was the single opening above—he would have to climb out through the hole at the top.

A height of a hundred and fifty meters was no difficulty for a man of Wei Zhao's skill, though it would take a little time. And in that little bit of time, the situation changed abruptly.

The Faceless Puppet, which had been cowed into stillness by the Ghost Thing's terrifying pressure, seized the opportunity and in an instant appeared behind Wei Zhao, ready to kill him with a single blow!

Wei Zhao's heart lurched. The creature was too fast—several times faster than it had shown before. He had no time to react. Fortunately, he did not need to.

Boom! The Faceless Puppet suddenly burst apart in midair, shattered into powder and scattered into nothing. At the same moment, Wei Zhao successfully climbed out through the opening at the top and saw the light of day once more.

"Senior, that was your doing just now, wasn't it? You gave me quite a scare!" Wei Zhao said, grateful to have survived.

An attack like that was something he could never have defended against on his own. What surprised him, though, was that the thing had crumbled into powder by itself—and only the Ghost Thing could have done that.

"Don't celebrate too soon. That was only one of that thing's toys, which is why I could crush it so easily with my divine consciousness. If it were the true body, in my current primal spirit state, I might not be able to do much against it," the Ghost Thing warned.

Wei Zhao's heart chilled again. So the Faceless Puppet really was just a toy the creature had fashioned—not its true body.

"Senior, just what kind of being is that thing?" Wei Zhao could not help asking.

"What do you think, boy?" the Ghost Thing answered with a question.

Wei Zhao frowned and thought, then said uncertainly, "The feeling it gave me is that it should be some kind of extraordinarily powerful spirit beast. But it's hard to imagine what its true form looks like."

"No need to imagine. The thing beneath your feet—that is its true body," the Ghost Thing explained.

"What? This giant cedar is its true body?" Wei Zhao was startled. Even with his remarkable capacity to accept things, the thought that the opponent he faced was the giant cedar beneath his feet sent a chill through him.

Unexpectedly, the Ghost Thing denied it: "You're wrong, boy. Beneath your feet there is not just a single cedar."

"What do you mean?" Wei Zhao was taken aback. He looked down at the bright Half-Moon Lake below and drew a sharp breath. "No way! Senior, you mean that this Half-Moon Lake as well is its true body?"

Looking back now, when he had crossed Half-Moon Lake earlier, the blood-red tentacle that attacked him—rather than calling it the tentacle of some water spirit beast, it had felt more like woven wooden vines.
