"Shh... let me let you in on a secret. I'm actually a consultant here at the casino—what you'd call a senior dealer. I'm not allowed to gamble." Tu Feng gave a low chuckle. "I only talked to you so much because you're a fellow countryman."
"Is that so! Then you must be seriously good, big brother. Consultants are usually the best gamblers in the whole casino!" Zhang Duopan had seen a few casino films, so naturally he knew what a consultant did.
"I do all right. By the way, where are you from?" Tu Feng asked, feigning casualness.
"I'm studying in Donghai right now. Donghai—ever heard of it, big brother? It's a provincial capital up north," Zhang Duopan said.
"Of course I've heard of it. I even have a friend over there!" Tu Feng said.
"A friend? Really? What a coincidence! What's your friend's name, big brother? Maybe I know him!" Zhang Duopan said, deliberately trying to cozy up. His real aim was to get Tu Feng to give him a few pointers, so he could enjoy a taste of being a gambling king himself!
"His name is Wei Zhao. He's a very capable man. I don't suppose you've heard of him?" Tu Feng said offhandedly.
"What?! Wei Zhao?" Zhang Duopan's eyes went wide at once. Then he thought it over—it could be a case of the same name—and asked, "What does this Wei Zhao do? I do know one, but I can't say whether it's the same person!"
"The Wei Zhao I know is a freshman at Donghai Engineering University," Tu Feng said. "By the way, little brother, which school do you attend? Have you heard of it?"
"Donghai Engineering University? A freshman?" This time Zhang Duopan was utterly certain—this Wei Zhao was the very Wei Zhao he knew! Both startled and delighted, he said, "Big brother, that's exactly the school I go to! I know the Wei Zhao you mean—he's my classmate, and he's on very good terms with the rest of us! See that guy over there? Bai Weituo—he's Wei Zhao's underling, they share a dorm room!"
"Oh?" A flicker of delight passed through Tu Feng's eyes. What luck—no effort wasted at all! He had been worrying earlier: if this were merely an ordinary classmate, abducted here, would Wei Zhao really be compelled to come?
Now things were better. This was Wei Zhao's own dormitory underling—Wei Zhao would have no choice but to come! At that thought, Tu Feng said, "Then it really is fate. How about this—why don't you all come sit in my office? A friend of a friend deserves my hospitality no matter what. I'll treat you to something to eat, then show you around the VIP casino upstairs. I guarantee it'll open your eyes!"
"That would be wonderful! Sorry to trouble you, big brother. I'll go call them!" Zhang Duopan was overjoyed—this was manna falling from heaven. He had always detested Wei Zhao, but now he could ride Wei Zhao's name to free food, free drink, and VIP treatment, and he was only too happy to keep his mouth shut about it.
"All right. I'll wait for you here," Tu Feng said with a nod.
So Zhang Duopan hurried over to Bai Weituo. Bai Weituo was not a gambler by nature; he had only come to look around and join the fun. As for actually gambling, he had merely tried his hand a little and had not played much.
He still had a great pile of chips left in his hand. Seeing Zhang Duopan approach, he nodded. "Well? Did you win any money?"
"Haha, won a little. But more than that, I've met a big shot!" Zhang Duopan said, unable to resist showing off. "He's a consultant at this casino—the highest-ranking dealer there is. And guess what? He's from our neck of the woods too, and he's a good friend of Wei Zhao's. We got to chatting and hit it off, and now he's invited us to his office for a bite, and then to see the VIP suites upstairs!"
"Huh? Good things like that just fall into your lap?" Bai Weituo's first instinct was that this was a con—a setup to make them lose money, surely?
