"Ah!" Yu Xiaoke had not expected there to be side effects as well. Now she truly had to give the matter careful thought.
So it took only a single day for Wei Zhao to draw near the Paoli clan; the ancient castle in the distant desert had already come into view.
"I never thought we would find this place so easily this time!" Yu Dake said with a sigh of feeling.
"Stay a little more alert. They are a foreign people, after all, so we must be careful," Wei Zhao said to Yu Dake.
"I understand!" Yu Dake nodded.
The car rolled slowly toward the castle, and just as it drew near, a man with pointed ears, triangular eyes, and a totem-embroidered robe suddenly appeared in front of the Grand Cherokee, blocking the way of Yu Dake and the others!
This man was Tolu. He had been waiting here these past few days for Wei Zhao to arrive, so that he might strike and finish Wei Zhao off.
"Stop the car! What business do you have here?" Tolu shouted.
Yu Dake brought the car to a swift halt, then stared at the man before the vehicle with some bewilderment. The fellow's appearance was simply too unlike an ordinary human's, and it gave Yu Dake quite a start.
"You must be a friend of the Paoli clan? We come from the Five Luminaries Sect of the Central Plains. My master is the current sect master of the Five Luminaries Sect, the White Leader, Ancestor Xuantian. We have come here hoping to do business with your noble clan!" Wei Zhao said, neither haughty nor humble. These words had been coached into him beforehand by the White Leader. The Paoli clan and the Five Luminaries Sect did, after all, have ties between them, so Wei Zhao declared his identity outright, hoping to win the other man's goodwill and thereby smooth the way for further talks of cooperation.
Yet Wei Zhao's words left Tolu dumbstruck! He stared at Wei Zhao in disbelief. He had not imagined that Wei Zhao was also of the Five Luminaries Sect, and moreover a disciple of the White Leader. Did that not mean the Five Luminaries Sect had already split into two factions, one led by Ancestor Xuantian and the other by Ancestor Xuanchen?
No wonder Kang Jingming wanted Wei Zhao dead, and had said he himself could not act—so it was because they were of the same sect! At this thought, Tolu felt a headache coming on. The Paoli clan and the Five Luminaries Sect were, after all, on very good terms!
Kang Jingming was indeed of the Five Luminaries Sect, but the Wei Zhao before his eyes was also of the Five Luminaries Sect. To kill Wei Zhao on Kang Jingming's behalf would plainly be meddling in another sect's internal strife. Yet Tolu thought again of Kang Jingming's earlier promise, and then of how Ancestor Xuantian had already been crippled, and he too made his decision!
"From what I hear, hasn't Ancestor Xuantian been crippled? How is he still sect master?" Tolu asked, betraying nothing in his expression.
Wei Zhao was taken aback. He had not expected Tolu to know of the White Leader's crippling, and his brows drew together slightly. Still, he said, "That is so, but my master is still sect master!"
"Oh, is that so? Then you may go and die!" Without the slightest warning, Tolu struck! His fist came smashing down at Wei Zhao inside the car!
Yu Dake was startled by the sudden attack as well, but by reflex he stamped on the accelerator. The engine had not been shut off, so the Grand Cherokee shot forward with a "whoosh."
Even so, Wei Zhao was still caught by the edge of Tolu's fist wind, which slammed into his shoulder with a thunderous blow! Tolu's original target, however, had been Wei Zhao's head. Had Yu Dake not acted on the instant, Wei Zhao would likely have been gravely wounded at this very moment!
Death was not likely, for Wei Zhao had also shielded himself with true qi, and the defensive boost of the Essence Necklace was there besides. He had no fear of being killed in a single blow. But the crux was this: gravely wounded as he was, how was Wei Zhao to respond?
