Yet when he summoned Secretary Lu and questioned him, he uncovered a matter that left him stunned. During the very window in which the general manager and He Dantou had conducted their transaction, Secretary Lu had actually been unconscious—passed out inside the restroom!
And Secretary Lu had not thought it anything serious. He assumed he had simply been exhausted from work and had fallen asleep in the bathroom; it never once crossed his mind that he had been secretly struck down, for he had felt nothing at all. Consequently, he had not gone to report to the general manager at the first opportunity after the incident.
Though the general manager did not wholly believe Secretary Lu's account, when he pulled the company's surveillance footage from that day, he discovered a startling secret. In the recorded images, two Secretary Lus appeared. The other had entered the company later, and upon entering had gone straight into hiding in the restroom!
Later, the real Secretary Lu entered the restroom. What happened in there was unclear, but soon afterward Secretary Lu emerged and went directly upstairs to the general manager's office. After that came everything that followed. And after Secretary Lu handed the laptop to He Dantou, this Secretary Lu came downstairs again and entered the restroom. Not long after, the Secretary Lu dressed in the clothes of the one who had come in later walked out of the restroom, went downstairs, and left the company. All of it pointed to one conclusion: there truly had been two Secretary Lus, and the one who had entered the office and helped him complete the transaction with Chairman He was almost certainly the impostor!
This discovery left the general manager somewhat speechless. For all his scheming and calculating, he had still capsized in a ditch. His opponent had slipped through a gap he had never imagined. It had never occurred to him that someone could transform into Secretary Lu, and an exact likeness at that, leaving him unable to find a single flaw.
Of course, he had not thought of it at the time. Had he thought of it and looked closely at Wei Zhao, he would surely have noticed something amiss. After all, a face can be disguised, but height and build still differ in subtle ways—differences that cannot be made up.
The same was true of the voice. However convincing the disguise, it remained a disguise; listen carefully and the differences would surely reveal themselves. But the general manager had never once suspected that Secretary Lu could be impersonated.
Seeing all this, the general manager knew that both Fanny and Secretary Lu were innocent—unwitting victims who had known nothing. The true culprit was that fake Secretary Lu who had appeared out of nowhere.
"Fanny, go pull up the company's surveillance footage from the past few days and go through it carefully. See if there is anyone suspicious!" the general manager instructed Fanny. "Secretary Lu, you go and look as well. See whether anything comes back to you!"
"Yes, my boss," Fanny said quickly.
Secretary Lu nodded in agreement as well, and the two of them withdrew from the general manager's office and went to the surveillance room to review the footage. But when it came to suspicious persons, aside from the "Yi Ling" who had come the day before, there was no one else even remotely suspect.
Everyone else was basically a longstanding client with a history of cooperation, and so could be ruled out. Only this Yi Ling was utterly suspect—he claimed to be the purchasing manager of the Bufon family's hotel group, but no such person existed at all. Secretary Lu's impression of him was very vivid as well.
"Fanny, pull up images of Yi Ling and of the man who impersonated me, and compare them!" Secretary Lu said.
"All right, Little Lu. You suspect this Yi Ling?" Fanny set to work at once. Her computer skills were decent, and she quickly and deftly captured the images of both men.
