Still, to be able to afford a villa and an X5M on top of it—these two siblings must be quite well off.
"Xiaoyi, Yaoyao, Xiaoshu!" Qingbo stepped out of the car, and the moment he caught sight of Wei Zhao and the other two, a heartfelt smile spread across his face. It had been over half a month since he had last seen the three of them. Hearing that the military training had ended, he had hurried straight over.
"Qingbo, you're looking sharp these days—seems everything over in Songshan has been going smoothly." Wei Zhao said with a smile. The old man had shed his former dejection entirely and now looked hale and high-spirited.
"Indeed. The Gu Group has settled onto a proper footing, and Mr. Gu has changed his whole approach to business. The Gu Group may well be on the verge of a period of rapid growth!" Qingbo said. "And we owe a great deal of it to Xiaoyi!"
Since Qingbo had also noticed a neighbor moving things nearby, he kept certain words to a hint and said no more.
"Qingbo, the food is all ready, and the person is ready too—we were only waiting on you!" Gu Mengyao said, eyeing Qingbo with a teasing little smile.
"The person is ready too?" Qingbo blinked, then at once recalled what Wei Zhao had mentioned before, and could not help shaking his head with a wry smile. "At my age, I no longer have any such thoughts. I thank you for your kindness, but I've thought it over carefully. I still cannot forget my wife, so..."
Though Qingbo did not finish, Wei Zhao and the others understood his meaning well enough: he did not wish to remarry just yet, so the matter had best be set aside for the present.
"Very well, then just meet her as ordinary friends," Wei Zhao said. "You are the steward over in Songshan, and Granny Sun is the steward here in Donghai. In the days to come the two of you will have plenty of chances to talk."
"Good. Ha, even if you hadn't said so, I've long wanted to pay a visit to this Madam Sun and thank her for taking you in back then!" Qingbo said.
As they spoke, the four of them walked into the villa, just as Granny Sun set the last hot dish upon the table. Seeing that guests had arrived, she called out warmly at once: "Mr. Lin, Miss Gu, your guests are here? The meal is all ready!"
At Granny Sun's words, the smile that had filled Qingbo's face froze on the instant. He raised his head in disbelief and looked toward Granny Sun—and in that instant he stood rooted to the spot as though struck by lightning, staring at her, so overcome that no words would come.
The years had changed her looks; wind and frost had aged her countenance. Yet Qingbo recognized the woman before him at a single glance—she was the woman who haunted his dreams, his wife, Sun Luoying.
It was her? She was not dead? She had been in Songshan all this time? Then why had she never come looking for him? He was, after all, a man of some renown in Songshan. He might not enjoy the constant exposure of a celebrity, but his figure had often appeared at Gu Pengzhan's side in the Songshan business papers...
"Qingbo, this is Granny Sun..." Wei Zhao began by way of introduction. He was about to introduce Qingbo to Granny Sun in turn when he turned his head and saw the blankness on Qingbo's face. Wei Zhao was taken aback. "Qingbo? Qingbo, what's wrong?"
Granny Sun was likewise at a loss. What was the matter with this man? Why had he fixed his eyes on her the moment he came in, staring until he seemed dazed? She knew well enough that she had dressed herself up a little these past days and had regained a certain charm, shedding some of her former haggardness—but she was certainly no great beauty. How could a middle-aged woman like her possibly stir a man's heart?
