Wang Xinyan felt a surge of gratitude. Wei Zhao had actually stayed awake, fearing danger might come—and at the thought she grew a little embarrassed. She had called him a pervert earlier; yet if he really were one, why hadn't he done something while she lay sleeping?
"I... I'm sorry about before. I shouldn't have called you that," Wang Xinyan said.
"Called me what? When did you ever call me anything?" Wei Zhao was baffled by her words. "Were you dreaming?"
"No—before we went to sleep... I said you were a pervert..." Wang Xinyan said, squirming.
"Oh... that. It's nothing." Wei Zhao gave a wry smile. "Right—what did you call me for?"
"Ah... I..." Reminded by his question, Wang Xinyan recalled her purpose and said hastily, "I... I drank too much water earlier, and I want to go out... but I'm a little scared."
"I see. Come on, I'll go with you." Wei Zhao sat up, then realized how easily his words could be misread and added, "I mean I'll watch you from far off... uh... not watch you exactly, just keep guard over you..."
Wei Zhao realized that the more he explained, the more suggestive it sounded—better to have said nothing at all.
"Mm..." Wang Xinyan understood what he meant and, cheeks flushing, stepped out of the tent ahead of him.
Wang Xinyan glanced left and right. The place she and Wei Zhao had chosen to camp was flat and open, an empty patch of ground—precisely why Wei Zhao had picked it—so when nature called, there was really nothing to serve as cover.
With no other choice, Wang Xinyan hurried toward the wooded slope, running several hundred meters before her figure vanished into a thicket.
Wei Zhao followed at a slow pace but did not get too close; he only needed a vague sense of where she was. Nor did he use the divine sense generated by the jade pendant space to probe her direction, because that would have let him see far too clearly.
Though Wang Xinyan was desperately in need, the thought that Wei Zhao stood nearby made her hesitate. In the stillness of the night every small sound carried with terrible clarity—wouldn't he hear whatever noise she made? At the thought of that embarrassing trickle, she found she could hardly go at all.
Wei Zhao waited a long while and heard nothing from her, which struck him as odd. But afraid of embarrassing her, he neither called out nor walked over; instead he entered the jade pendant space and used the divine sense born of his mental power to probe the situation in the distance.
Two figures in camouflage fatigues were all but invisible in the nighttime woods, yet under Wei Zhao's divine sense they stood out perfectly clear!
One of them was Chinese; the other was a yellow-haired foreigner. What were they doing out here in the middle of the night?
At that thought, Wei Zhao did not withdraw his divine sense but fixed it upon the two men.
"Otedi, I've brought the goods. Are the bills ready?" It was the Chinese man who spoke; the two seemed to have just made contact.
"Bald Wolf, why is it you? Wasn't Brother De the one who used to make the deliveries?" Otedi recognized the newcomer, but he was not the familiar contact from previous deals—only one of that man's subordinates—so he asked with some caution.
"Brother De has been assigned by the higher-ups to new duties with the Fire Wolf Gang. I've taken over things here." The man called Bald Wolf spoke with no small pride: "From now on, I'm the one in charge of the drug trade at the border!"
"Oh? Then I'll have to call you Brother Bald Wolf from now on. Congratulations!" The foreigner's Chinese was actually quite good, very fluent.
"Hahaha, you're too kind!" Bald Wolf laughed heartily, plainly delighted by his promotion.
"Ah—!" Wang Xinyan had been tense to begin with, and the sudden burst of laughter startled a cry out of her before she could stop herself...
