Wei Zhao made no attempt to hide it. His aim was to pass the word to Yu Ning through Yu Bing, to let her know that he not only had a girlfriend but was quite the philanderer. Surely someone of her standing would give up upon hearing that.
Yet Wei Zhao's purpose seemed to miss its mark, and not only miss it, it inexplicably eased Yu Bing's heart. He had originally taken Wei Zhao for a rigid, straitlaced man, but now it seemed he was not. Since Wei Zhao already had two girlfriends, one more, his little sister, would make no difference. Though it looked as if his sister would be at a disadvantage, if Wei Zhao had been a rigid man, she would not even have the chance to suffer that slight.
The reason Yu Bing thought nothing of it was that he had been born into a hidden house, where three wives and four concubines were a perfectly normal thing. Only when the principal wife was especially formidable and backed by powerful influence, as in a marriage of alliance, would a man keep to a single wife.
Take for example Zhao Guangyin, the present head of the Zhao family, who for now has only Yu Xiaojin as his wife. Yet though in name Zhao Guangyin has but one wife, he has illegitimate children outside, and that is no secret.
And Yu Bing's own father had later taken two concubines, though neither had borne children. On this point Yu Bing was open-minded and saw nothing improper in it.
"Already two? Then one more makes no difference. Ha, Yu Ning can rest easy now, she still has her chance!" Yu Bing said with a laugh.
"Huh?" Hearing Yu Bing's words, Wei Zhao nearly fainted on the spot. He realized his words had not only failed to make Yu Bing give up, but had strengthened his resolve all the more. What manner of thinking did their hidden Yu family hold?
"What is wrong?" Yu Bing asked, puzzled by Wei Zhao's expression.
"Nothing..." Wei Zhao gave a wry smile. "Apart from me, does your Yu family have any other allies?"
"The Yu family does have ties, the Yu family and the hidden Zhao family are joined by marriage, but the one who came this time is no direct son or grandson of the Zhao family. It is Zhao Qilei, and he has now thrown in with my cousin Yu Shan. Those two are clearly set on forming an alliance..." Yu Bing smiled bitterly. "Every family has its own troubles, so apart from you, for the moment I truly cannot think of any ally worth courting..."
"Heh... it is nothing. Then let us go out and walk around, and look at the people of the other families. Even if we cannot win them over, we can forge some goodwill. If they could not be friends, then best not to be enemies. This had also been Zhao Qilei's approach at first, only after hearing Yu Bing's words, Wei Zhao knew he and Zhao Qilei could never become allies. By instinct, that fellow from the Zhao family would likely not hold Zhao Qibing's affair against him, even if he learned of it, it would not matter. One could see his scheming plainly from the way he was courting Yu Shan.
