"Ha ha ha ha, Su Taizao, you really are one colossal idiot!" Shen Yushu pointed at him through her laughter. "Boo hoo hoo, here comes the ghost ... scared you half to death!"
An Liwen had never expected Gu Mengyao and the others to come along as well. A glance at the getup of Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu and Tang Zhi, and it suddenly dawned on him: had that fool Su Taizao actually taken the three of them for ghosts?
Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu and Tang Zhi were all in white nightgowns with facial masks pasted over their faces; at a sudden glance in the dark they did look remarkably like ghosts. An Liwen only knew them by Shen Yushu's voice — if he hadn't recognized it, he would probably have jumped out of his skin too!
But a fright was a fright — there was no call to be frightened into such a spineless wretch!
At the thought of it, An Liwen burned with shame and fury. This underling of his had made a perfect fool of him, actually taking the three of them for ghosts!
"Open those eyes wide and look — where are there any ghosts here? These are Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu and Tang Zhi! Where's the ghost? Point him out!" An Liwen roared.
Su Taizao froze for an instant, raised his head and saw Gu Mengyao, Tang Zhi and Shen Yushu; a shudder ran through his whole body. How come there were three ghosts?
"Brother An, aren't they ghosts? They've turned into three ghosts!" Su Taizao cried.
"What three ghosts? I told you already — this is Gu Mengyao, Tang Zhi and Shen Yushu!" An Liwen explained through a frown.
"That ..." Su Taizao blinked, looked properly, and sure enough, it was just as An Liwen said: they were not ghosts but Gu Mengyao, Shen Yushu and Tang Zhi! It was only that the three wore white nightrobes and still had facial masks plastered on their faces, which made it easy to mistake them for ghosts!
"Boo hoo hoo, I'm a ghost!" Shen Yushu stuck out her tongue and slipped back into her usual manner.
"Phew ..." Su Taizao finally let out his breath, released An Liwen and climbed off him, patting his chest. "Ha, so it's you, Sister Yaoyao and Sister Xiaoshu! Haha, I was only having a joke with you — otherwise, with this long night and no sleep in me, there'd be nothing to pass the time, right?"
"Oh, I get it, oh!" Shen Yushu said, smiling sweetly at Su Taizao — yet that "I get it" was brimming with contempt.
"Su Taizao, what did you get all over me? It's soaking wet! What's that smell? What the — how can it reek so badly? Don't tell me you've wet your pants!" An Liwen let out a sudden shriek and began hopping about on the spot, shaking the wet streaks off his clothes ...
"Wow, Brother Taizao, you really do still wet the bed at your age!" Reminded of their earlier game of Truth or Dare, Shen Yushu shot back caustically.
"I — I never wet the bed! That was just wetting my pants — ah, no! Not wetting my pants! I didn't pee!" Su Taizao, his face scarlet, flapped his arms and legs as he stammered out his defense.
"Ha ha ha ha!" Shen Yushu laughed and said no more.
"All right, Xiaoshu, let's go back and rest. It's getting late — don't we have to get up tomorrow to watch the sunrise?" Gu Mengyao had caught the strange smell as well and had no wish to stay a moment longer.
"Ha ha, okay!" Shen Yushu pulled a face at Su Taizao. "Ooh ooh ooh — whatever you do, don't dream of me tonight, or I'll scare you to death and you'll wet the bed again!"
Su Taizao shuddered on the spot, thinking: that was right, whatever happened he must not have a nightmare, or he'd wet the bed again — and wouldn't that be mortifying! He said awkwardly, "How could I? I stopped wetting the bed ages ago — ah, no! I never wet the bed in the first place!"
"Ha ha, let's go!" Shen Yushu said no more, but turned around with Gu Mengyao and Tang Zhi, ready to leave.
