"Oh?" Wei Zhao was briefly taken aback.
"She said that when she got up this morning, she found there was barely any gas left in her car — not enough to reach school — so she wanted you to come pick her up..." Tang Zhi waved her phone and said, "Xiaoxiao just called me."
"Isn't there a gas station right by her front gate?" Wei Zhao found Feng Xiaoxiao's excuse a little hard to know whether to laugh or cry over.
"Is there?" Tang Zhi was taken aback too, then burst out laughing. "Honestly, Xiaoxiao — next time she should come up with a slightly more plausible excuse..."
"You knew all along she was lying?" Wei Zhao said with a smile.
"Mm... she admitted it..." Tang Zhi smiled as well. "You won't blame me for not being straight with you, will you?"
"Of course not." Wei Zhao shook his head. Given Tang Zhi's nature, with Feng Xiaoxiao already in such a state, she would naturally want to make her a little happier — so teaming up with her to pull one over on him was only to be expected.
With that, Wei Zhao swiftly drove the car toward Feng Xiaoxiao's residential compound.
Downstairs at her compound, Wei Zhao saw Feng Xiaoxiao, all done up and looking lovely, standing beaming at her doorway. Her petite figure, a schoolbag slung over her shoulder, brimmed with an indefinable youthful energy.
There was simply no connecting her with someone walking toward the end of her life. Had Wei Zhao not known full well about the strange condition inside her body, he would never have believed that Feng Xiaoxiao was really about to die.
Just then, the same smile she always wore on her face, Feng Xiaoxiao spotted Wei Zhao's car and came running over, overflowing with delight.
Tang Zhi and Feng Xiaoxiao settled into the back of the Beetle, leaving the passenger seat empty.
"Hehe, sorry about this — my car ran out of gas, so I had to make you come get me!" Feng Xiaoxiao said to Wei Zhao apologetically once she was in.
"Oh. All right," Wei Zhao said with a nod.
"All right?" Feng Xiaoxiao was baffled by Wei Zhao's reply. What did he mean by "all right"?
Tang Zhi covered her mouth and stifled a laugh.
Feng Xiaoxiao still had no idea what was going on.
Wei Zhao drove the car out of the compound gate, then turned into a small side street nearby. After a winding series of turns, he pulled into a gas station.
"My car's out of gas too. Just filling up," Wei Zhao said mildly, without calling her out on the lie she had told earlier.
But Feng Xiaoxiao's face flushed scarlet all at once. She might be a clever little thing who could lie without blinking — but that was when she was teasing other people. Now, facing Wei Zhao, she suddenly felt she wanted to sink into the ground.
Wei Zhao hadn't called her out directly, but wasn't the situation as good as an outright callout? Feng Xiaoxiao had never imagined that Wei Zhao would know there was a gas station near her home! It was well hidden, tucked away down a side street — unless you were a nearby resident or especially familiar with the area, you would never find it.
Yet Wei Zhao had found it — and now he meant to fill up here.
Wei Zhao got straight out and went to fetch the fuel nozzle. Inside the car, Feng Xiaoxiao pressed her burning cheeks, squirming restlessly. "Ahhh, what do I do, Sister Yunyun? Isn't it obvious he knows I lied to him?"
"Heh..." Tang Zhi gave her a teasing look. "So he knows. What of it?"
"Then he won't trust what I say anymore..." Feng Xiaoxiao said with a trace of worry.
"Heh, it's fine. He'd already guessed." Tang Zhi smiled.
"What? He'd guessed already!" Feng Xiaoxiao grew even more embarrassed. She hadn't expected Wei Zhao to have seen through her lie beforehand.
Wei Zhao finished fueling up and got back in the car. Without saying much, he started the engine and drove off in the direction of the school.
But the less Wei Zhao said, the more uneasy Feng Xiaoxiao felt! If he had scolded her a little, she would have felt more normal about it.
