Chapter 642 — Caught in the Middle

"Mm." Tang Zhi smoothed the hair back from her forehead and gave a slight nod. The scar on her head was now completely invisible; there was no trace left of the injury at all.
"Wei Zhao, I heard you broke Zhao Qibing's legs?" There was a violent streak buried deep in Liu Xinlan's bones, and she was thoroughly impressed that Wei Zhao had snapped Zhao Qibing's legs! Back when Zhao Qibing had come swaggering into the shantytown to throw his weight around, Liu Xinlan had wanted to grab a cleaver and go settle things with her life on the line, but violent as she was, she was no fool — she knew Zhao Qibing kept a pack of skilled bodyguards close at hand, and that going herself would accomplish nothing against him.
Tang Zhi's face had been smashed and disfigured, and Liu Xinlan had been furious and frightened for her — but Wei Zhao had broken Zhao Qibing's legs, and that foul grievance had been repaid! Only that night Wei Zhao had been injured, and Tang Zhi and Gu Mengyao had been locked in a war of words, leaving Liu Xinlan no chance to ask Wei Zhao about it.
"Broke them. And I'm the one who had his tower knocked down, too," Wei Zhao said mildly. As far as he was concerned, that punishment was nothing at all; not having finished Zhao Qibing off was already letting him off easy.
"My God! You're a legend! The news said it collapsed because the construction was substandard." Liu Xinlan of course knew the Qibing Tower had come down, but she had not known it was Wei Zhao who brought it down — the news had reported it collapsed on its own, and at the time Liu Xinlan had been baffled. Even if Zhao Qibing, that developer, were the most conscienceless crook alive, churning out jerry-built projects, surely he would not make a piece of jerry-built garbage out of his own office tower — how brain-dead would a man have to be? Only now did Liu Xinlan learn the truth had been something else entirely: "But this is even better — let him not sell a single one of his apartments!"
Kang Xiaofeng knew nothing of this and stood to one side listening in a fog, firing off question after question; once he had heard the whole story, though, he was not overly astonished. This was simply how Wei Zhao was — this time he had just made a bigger splash than usual.
The four of them talked as they walked toward the cafeteria, when suddenly Liu Xinlan slowed her steps and said in a low voice, "Wei Zhao, your family's eldest young lady is up ahead..."
Wei Zhao had in fact already spotted Gu Mengyao and Shen Yushu not far off; hearing Liu Xinlan, he merely shrugged.
"Xinwen, don't." Tang Zhi tugged at Liu Xinlan's sleeve, stopping her from going on. Tang Zhi did not want Gu Mengyao brought up all the time — otherwise people would think she was afraid of Gu Mengyao.
Liu Xinlan was speaking of Gu Mengyao, while up ahead, Shen Yushu had in turn started talking about Tang Zhi.
"Yao Yao, my latest reconnaissance has turned up that Arrow Brand Bro and Tang Zhi are right behind us!" Shen Yushu said in a low voice to Gu Mengyao. "Yao Yao, should we come up with some kind of countermeasure?"
"What brilliant idea do you have?" Gu Mengyao asked with a frown.
"He's our follower. In a bit we'll call him over to eat with us and have him guard us at close range!" Shen Yushu said after a moment's thought.
Gu Mengyao hesitated, neither agreeing nor disagreeing, and only once she had stepped inside the cafeteria did she say, "You go order the food. Order plenty."
"Oh — Yao Yao, are you going to invite Arrow Brand Bro to eat with us?" Shen Yushu asked.
"Cut the nonsense and get going!" Gu Mengyao said.
