"What are you screaming for? Moaning like that!" Gu Mengyao thought Shen Yushu's cries sounded rather like a certain other kind of sound, and couldn't help glaring at her.
"Ahh, ahh, ahh..." With her mouth held open, Shen Yushu couldn't speak; apart from "ahh," she couldn't produce a single other syllable.
"Bear with it, it'll be over in a moment." Wei Zhao fetched a chopstick from the kitchen and gently probed at the back of Shen Yushu's throat.
"Ahh, ahh, ahh..." A wave of nausea seized Shen Yushu. At last, under Wei Zhao's ministrations, she retched with a loud "blargh" and threw up. Her lunch had barely been digested at all; it came straight out onto the floor — though she managed to get it all over Gu Mengyao's hands.
Yet at a moment like this, the young lady showed no disgust. Instead she looked at Shen Yushu with concern. "Xiaoshu, how do you feel?"
Once Shen Yushu started vomiting, there was no stopping her — she heaved and heaved, bringing up nearly everything in her stomach.
"Ugh, ugh, ugh, ugh, I feel awful, but much better..." Shen Yushu had only spoken after she had more or less finished throwing up.
"Good, good, good — you scared me half to death!" Gu Mengyao was still shaking with aftershock. What would she have done if Xiaoshu had actually stuffed herself to death?
"There was nothing wrong with you to begin with — you just ate too much." Wei Zhao shook his head. "If you can't eat that much, why did you eat it?"
"Sister Mengyao told me to..." Shen Yushu said aggrievedly. She had nearly died — who wouldn't feel wronged?
"Why on earth did you make her eat so much?" Wei Zhao was a little angry. This was no laughing matter. Thank goodness she was all right.
"I..." Gu Mengyao had not expected Wei Zhao to actually pull a long face and interrogate her. But she was in the wrong, and dared not talk back.
"Sister Mengyao didn't want you to bring food to Tang Zhi, so she made me eat it all..." Shen Yushu told the truth.
"..." Wei Zhao shook his head, momentarily speechless. It was roughly what he had guessed — these two girls were impossible.
"Xiaoshu, stop talking!" Gu Mengyao was a little embarrassed. "You're very weak — go back to your room and rest."
"Oh..." Prompted by Gu Mengyao's words, Shen Yushu did in fact feel her whole body go limp. So she said, "I can't walk, Sister Mengyao..."
Gu Mengyao wanted to get Shen Yushu upstairs, but couldn't carry her on her back. After a moment's hesitation, she could only say to Wei Zhao, "Wei Zhao, carry her upstairs on your back."
"Upstairs? I'm allowed to go up?" Wei Zhao pointed toward the upper floor. When he had first come, Gu Mengyao had told him very firmly that he was not permitted to go upstairs.
"This is an exception — I'm permitting it," Gu Mengyao said. "Just this once."
"There's General Weiwu." Wei Zhao glanced toward the head of the stairs, where the General was still squatting. He did not want Gu Mengyao to discover that he wasn't afraid of the General — otherwise, if anything ever went missing from upstairs, he would never be able to explain it away.
"You're not afraid of it — don't think I don't know." Gu Mengyao snorted. "Now hurry up and carry Xiaoshu upstairs!"
