"No, no, nothing of the sort!" Shen Yushu shook her head again and again, her secret thoughts laid bare.
"If it's nothing, then why is your face so red?" Gu Mengyao was not convinced.
"I just thought that the wish I made before would be a little hard to fulfill... hee hee, but I've made up my mind — I'm going to change my wish!" Shen Yushu declared. "I've decided that I'll marry the same man as Yao-yao, so the two of us can be together forever!"
"..." Gu Mengyao broke out in a cold sweat. "Why are you still hung up on that wish?"
Toward evening, however, an unwelcome visitor arrived at the villa.
Wei Zhao had not expected that wretch An Liwen to have the nerve to show his face here again. Hadn't he been taught enough of a lesson last time?
Still, seeing that grin plastered across his face, Wei Zhao almost wondered whether the fellow had been beaten into amnesia.
"Brother Lin, I really must apologize for last time — I never imagined a simple dinner would end so badly. That was my fault, it truly was. I've been away from Songshan City for several years and didn't know how things stood here. Never mind... let's not bring up last time. Are you free tonight? A few of my brothers all admire Brother Lin's great name and would like to share a few drinks with you?" An Liwen said to Wei Zhao with a smile.
Wei Zhao gave An Liwen a peculiar look. Surely this fellow hadn't taken a loss last time and was now scheming for revenge? The man really was impatient — coming to settle scores so soon?
Wei Zhao turned to Gu Mengyao and asked what she thought.
Gu Mengyao had naturally guessed that An Liwen could not possibly mean well. Unless the man suffered from amnesia, he could not have forgotten that Wei Zhao had trounced him not long ago — the bandage on his forehead was proof enough.
"Brother Jianwen, is there something wrong with your head?" Shen Yushu asked, looking at An Liwen in astonishment as well.
"..." Several black lines appeared on An Liwen's forehead. "Xiaoshu, what are you talking about? I don't follow..."
"Nothing. I just think you're looking to get thrashed..." Shen Yushu could not care less about An Liwen's dignity, nor did she feel any need to spare his face.
Shen Yushu's words annoyed An Liwen somewhat, but he did not dare talk back. For one thing, he minded the image he presented before Gu Mengyao; for another, he truly could not afford to offend this little miss.
"Yao-yao, today I'm hosting a dinner to thank my savior. You wouldn't mind lending me your bodyguard for a while, would you?" An Liwen said, gazing at Gu Mengyao with a smile. He deliberately stressed the words "bodyguard," making clear that he already knew Wei Zhao was her bodyguard.
Gu Mengyao frowned. That her daddy had hired Wei Zhao was no secret — many people in the group knew of it. If An Liwen had taken the trouble to ask around, there was no hiding it from him.
So, since he had already said it outright, she stopped making an issue of Wei Zhao's position. "It's evening now. What he chooses to do is beyond my control."
In truth, Gu Mengyao still nursed a bit of resentment. The afternoon's events had left her temper simmering with no outlet, so when she saw An Liwen making trouble for Wei Zhao, she was only too glad to let Wei Zhao have a little trouble of his own.
Though the outcome was easy to foresee — An Liwen would get thrashed again — Gu Mengyao simply did not want Wei Zhao to have it so easy. Sending him off to busy himself would relieve a little of the hatred in her heart.
"Heh heh, Brother Lin, your boss has already agreed. What do you say — do me this favor?" An Liwen looked at Wei Zhao with a smile.
"Fine, let's go then!" Wei Zhao nodded. Since Gu Mengyao had put it that way, he supposed he would grudgingly go thrash the fellow once more. A shield had to know its duty as a shield — he couldn't take his salary for nothing, could he?
