When he got in, he saw that Gu Mengyao had been wearing a stern face the whole time, while Shen Yushu, that girl, was stifling her laughter off to the side. Clearly, Gu Mengyao had heard something about him delivering a love letter to Tang Zhi.
Wei Zhao shook his head. Gu Mengyao was obviously angry, but because Uncle Qing was present, it was not convenient for her to lose her temper, so she had been holding it in all along.
The three of them did not speak a word the whole way. Even Shen Yushu, who was usually so talkative, had shut her mouth at that moment and stopped chattering, so as not to affect Gu Mengyao's mood.
Back at the villa, Wei Zhao had just wanted to return to his own room when Gu Mengyao suddenly called him to a halt.
"Wei Zhao, stop right there!"
Wei Zhao had wanted to dodge the young lady a little. She was in the middle of a fit of anger, and who would want to provoke her? But before he could slip away, she caught him. Wei Zhao turned his head and saw Gu Mengyao standing there with her hands on her hips, looking fierce and formidable.
"Um, Miss Chu, is there something you need?" Wei Zhao gave two dry laughs.
"Wei Zhao, you've got some nerve, haven't you? Barely two days at school and there's already a scandal about you? My daddy pays your salary so you can go around philandering on campus?" Gu Mengyao was truly furious... Was Wei Zhao really this shameless?
"Miss Gu, when your daddy hired me, he made it very clear—he wanted me to look after your studies and your daily life. As for everything else, that's hardly within the scope of my job, is it?" Wei Zhao felt he had been too soft all along. A man had to stand firm in many situations, or the young miss would never learn what he was made of.
"You—" Gu Mengyao was choked with anger, left speechless by Wei Zhao's retort! Indeed, by any measure Wei Zhao was just an employee her father had hired; his private life was none of her business, was it?
If he wanted a girlfriend, what business was it of hers to get so worked up? And yet Gu Mengyao felt terrible inside! What gave him the right—even if he wanted to stir up a scandal, shouldn't it be with her and Xiaoshu? He didn't go after the ones right in his own house, but ran off to flirt with other women—what was that supposed to mean? That she and Xiaoshu weren't attractive enough?
That was it—she was certainly just angry because Wei Zhao had ignored her and Xiaoshu! Gu Mengyao blamed her fury on Wei Zhao overlooking her charms. What woman could tolerate the men around her ignoring them?
Such an insult was harder to bear than death itself!
But Gu Mengyao simply couldn't say it—how could she? Was she supposed to ask Wei Zhao, 'Are you blind? Two pretty girls right under your nose and you can't see them, but you go chasing after other women outside?'
"You... just watch yourself, that's all! Don't drag me and Xiaoshu's reputations through the mud! We don't want people thinking our sidekick is that kind of person!" Gu Mengyao could only say this much in her anger.
"Oh, don't worry, Miss Gu. At school I'll keep my distance from you as much as possible—I won't let anyone find out about our connection," Wei Zhao said with a nod.
"You... I..." Wei Zhao's words left Gu Mengyao frozen on the spot... staring at him blankly, unable to speak. She had never expected that her own words would draw such a response from Wei Zhao... Was this the answer and outcome she had wanted?
Gu Mengyao didn't know. She only felt an unbearable ache inside, an indescribable sense of loss and oppression, as though something had suddenly been emptied out of her, leaving her with nothing to hold on to...
