Chapter 127 — Tang Zhi Cried, and Tang Zhi Cried to Everyone for Monthly Votes... "Monthly votes, monthly votes..." Tang Zhi was rather startled, not only because Wang Zhifeng had so easily glossed over the earlier inquest, but more because of what he said afterward—that he wanted Wei Zhao to come find him again in a little while!

"You seem very afraid of me?" Wei Zhao had noticed that Tang Zhi guarded against him like a hedgehog. This was no good sign at all—he still wanted to cultivate a pure and innocent romance; it couldn't wither before it had even begun, could it?

"Afraid of you? What for?" Tang Zhi twisted her body uncomfortably and edged a little farther from Wei Zhao. "It's you—what exactly do you want?"

"Nothing at all, is there?" Wei Zhao looked rather innocent. True, he did rather covet Tang Zhi's looks; she really was a fine piece of work. He was a normal man, and more or less he would have his thoughts, but he had made no move to go further.

Seeing that innocent-to-death look in his eyes, Tang Zhi bit her lip in vexation. "You drove off Zou Ruoming, then went and buttered up my mother... and you gave me a dress. Aren't you trying to... to court me?"

Though Tang Zhi was a little embarrassed, now that the words had come this far, she might as well say it plainly and let Wei Zhao give up early.

"Uh... gave you a dress?" Wei Zhao had not expected that after he'd taken fifty yuan off the girl, she still thought the dress was a gift from him. As a gift, this one was truly masterful! He might as well open a gift-delivery company later, specializing in delivering presents for people.

But courting... It seemed he had guessed right. The girl really did think he was courting her, and that everything he'd done was just to stage some worn-out old scenes and seize the chance to get close to her! Ha, Wei Zhao could only smile bitterly. If Yang Huaijun knew about this, he would laugh himself into a fit.

"All right, I do want to court you. So what?" A mischievous streak rose in Wei Zhao; he wanted to tease Tang Zhi, so he simply nodded and admitted it.

"You... you... how can you be like this!" Tang Zhi had not expected that when she provoked him, Wei Zhao would really tear off his disguise and just admit it. That left her at a loss all at once, and she did not know what to do. She lowered her head, not daring to look at Wei Zhao, and her earlier courage to question him was gone.

Tang Zhi's head was bowed so low it was about to sink into her collar. The nape of her neck, usually hidden by her lovely hair, now met Wei Zhao's eyes, that fair skin setting his imagination adrift.

Wei Zhao was just about to tease her a few more times when he saw Tang Zhi's long lashes quiver, her shoulders rising and falling faintly, and a glint of crystal at the corner of her eye sliding down her cheek.

Wei Zhao was instantly startled out of his wits. Tang Zhi was actually crying! This little spitfire wasn't that fragile, was she? He'd seen her fiercely stamp on his foot before and thought her so tough—who would have guessed a few words from him would reduce her to tears.

Even Wang Zhifeng hadn't had that much power earlier!

"There, there. Don't cry," Wei Zhao said. He had never comforted a girl before, and now he was all thumbs, at a loss what to do. "If you stop crying, I'll buy you some candy..."

Hearing Wei Zhao try to soothe her with such nonsense, the sort of thing one said to a child, Tang Zhi grew even more furious. She was sure he was mocking her on purpose, and the sense of grievance swelled in her chest, so that she wept all the harder, bent over the desk, sobbing.

"There, there. As long as you stop crying, I'll promise you one thing, anything within my power." Wei Zhao had never made a promise to anyone, but once he gave his word, he would see it through.

If Yang Huaijun had known that the captain, just to coax a girl into silence, had broken all precedent and given his word, he would surely have been astonished beyond measure.

"As if anyone cares..." Tang Zhi was deeply aggrieved. After those few words she paid Wei Zhao no further attention.
