Chapter 315 — Season of Harvest [Update 1]

"What change?" Tang Tang asked urgently.

"Take a look, my lord." Fei Cheng opened the bronze cold-storage box and drew out a test tube.

The contents of the tube resembled mercury, carrying a powerful silver-white metallic sheen, viscous in texture, flecked with specks of black sand — utterly mysterious.

"This is my blood?" Tang Tang was dumbstruck, scarcely able to believe his own eyes.

"Yes." Fei Cheng spoke with a touch of fervor: "This subordinate has seen such wondrous blood for the first time as well, and moreover, this is by no means its original form. The composition of the silver liquid and the black sand is not yet understood, but this subordinate dares to assert that, like the Void Dark Flame and the Ice Blue Heart, they amount to a second lock."

"A second lock?" Tang Tang was dazed.

"My lord's blood is certainly extraordinary." Fei Cheng said, spirits rising: "The Void Dark Flame and the Ice Blue Heart are the outermost locks upon my lord's blood — two substances of utterly opposite nature, yet brought into a subtle balance, like a lock, and like a protective layer as well. The silver liquid and the black sand form yet another entirely new balance. If my lord wishes to awaken the power of his bloodline, he must open every one of the locks."

"Why would my blood contain such things?" Tang Tang asked instinctively.

Fei Cheng glanced at Tang Tang, somewhat hesitant.

Tang Tang glared at him: "Out with it."

Fei Cheng said sheepishly: "On this matter, who could say for certain? But this old fellow does have a few conjectures."

"A few?" Tang Tang was startled — he himself had not a single conjecture, and Fei Cheng had actually thought up several. Curious, he asked: "Which ones?"

"Then we must trace it from these locks. In this old fellow's view, the greatest function of these locks is protection. One possibility is that they protect my lord's bloodline from being exploited by outsiders. Even if others obtained my lord's bloodline, it would be of no use to them — unless they could break these locks, and that is exceedingly difficult. Another possibility is that they protect my lord from the bloodline's backlash."

"The bloodline can backfire?" Tang Tang had never heard of such a thing; his face was full of astonishment.

"It can." Fei Cheng explained: "Why is it that those mighty ancient races are for the most part extinguished today? Because their pure bloodlines contained power too immense; once that power erupted and their bodies could not withstand it, they would burst and die. Especially during the illusion phase, such bursting was common. The battle races of today have impure bloodlines, and thus face no danger of bursting — in truth, that too is a form of evolution, one that lets the race endure."

"Could it be that my bloodline is very formidable?" Tang Tang's spirits lifted.

"That we do not yet know." Fei Cheng shook his head, cautious: "It can only be known once fully unlocked. Perhaps my lord's bloodline is not necessarily powerful, but may be very special, very sensitive — to evade enemies, say. That is not impossible either."

"So as long as it is completely unlocked, we can figure it out?" Tang Tang was thoroughly dizzy from Fei Cheng's one possibility after another.

"Yes." Fearing that Tang Tang would slap his head and demand answers on the spot, Fei Cheng hastily added: "This is long-term work, and will stretch on for a very long while. The substance and power of every layer of lock are unknown; to understand any of them is no easy task. As for the Ice Blue Heart and the Void Dark Flame, it happens that this old fellow has seen them before, which is why progress there is somewhat quicker."

Tang Tang knew this was not something to be rushed, so he comforted him: "Just do your best, as fast as you can."
