Chapter 1492 — "Erroneous Copy"

Gao Yang had barely digested his internal snark when he heard this from across the way, and his bronchial tubes immediately began twitching. He stared at Amber for a good while before he managed to force out: "That's what you conclude after all that thinking? The Lady of Night's Staff of Shadow ends up in your hands and its function is to club people over the head?!"
"Everything starts from practicality—isn't that what you always say!" Amber was positively self-righteous. "And look how perfect this thing is—the size, the balance, that solid knob at the head—swing it full force and it'd crack a skull open beautifully. And I can keep it hidden normally, summon it only when I need it—nothing beats a silent, sudden ambush. Way better than a power cudgel. Plus who knows what material it's made of, but it's obviously sturdier than any steel in the mortal world—in a pinch it could double as a crowbar..."
As she spoke, she lapsed into serious consideration, hefting the shadow short rod and gesturing with it in midair: "I even suspect the Lady of Night normally uses her staff as a cudgel. After all, nightfall and a good clubbing go together perfectly..."
Gao Yang suddenly realized that when it came to this kind of absurd topic, he could never seem to hold his own against Amber's pile of twisted logic—and the root cause was probably that he still had a sense of shame...
Still, this was hardly a serious subject, and he had no time to argue in earnest with a Shadow Assault Goose, so he finally waved a hand: "Forget it. Given your combat ability, I really can't expect you to go charging into battle with a free knockoff stick. We won't discuss what use this short rod might have in your hands... Let's talk seriously. Do you feel anything special holding it? Or did a chunk of information suddenly appear in your mind?"
He remembered that unusual things had happened when Amber first obtained the Shadow Dust and the Shadow Rift. The first Shadow Dust had established her connection with the Divine Realm of Shadow, and the light-and-shadow rift had let her brush against the "aura" the Lady of Night had left behind in a daze—she had even briefly lost consciousness and collapsed because of it. Now this black-and-white staff gave off a sense of even higher "rank" than the dust and the rift... What effect would it have on Amber?
But watching her swing the short rod about with perfect composure, she looked nothing like someone under any influence—if anything, she looked insufferably smug.
Amber was jolted by Gao Yang's words. She quickly glanced down at the hand gripping the short rod, then frowned and carefully probed at something. Only after a long while did she hesitantly shake her head: "I don't feel anything special... which is a bit strange, actually. I remember reacting strongly when I first came into contact with the other two things, but this staff doesn't have that effect. You saw it—even I was startled when I 'summoned' it. I didn't even know I'd brought it out of 'there'..."
"No abnormal sensation at all, and you weren't even aware of its existence before..." Gao Yang's brow furrowed tightly. "Don't you find that highly suspicious?"
Amber thought it over seriously, then spoke with some uncertainty: "Maybe it's because I'm strong? So I've gradually adapted... Isn't it a good thing that there's no abnormal reaction after contact with the Lady of Night's things?"
Her thinking was optimistic, but Gao Yang's brow did not dare relax in the slightest, because his mind had gone in an entirely different direction—
