Chapter 1255 — Reunion in the Homeland

Amber was fast.
So fast that even a Legend's dynamic vision could scarcely track her — a flicker that crossed the boundary between shadow and reality. Gao Yang and Victoria heard only a rush of wind past their ears before a certain disgrace to the Alliance had already dissolved into a swift streak of black light. The next instant, Victoria felt something heavy clamp onto her thigh, and heard a voice cry out: "Just a little longer to observe!"
Gao Yang's head throbbed. After all these years he had seen more than his share of Amber's absurd stunts, yet even he could hardly hold up under this one. He stepped forward, seized the fellow by the belt, and hoisted her bodily into the air: "All right, enough of this disgrace — Mo Jin, what happened?"
By now Victoria had finally recovered. The Duchess of the North, ever composed and unmoved no matter the circumstances, was staring wide-eyed as though she had never in her life been so thoroughly startled; she was almost at a loss for what to do with her hands and feet, and only after Gao Yang had carried Amber off did she belatedly take half a step back... So in a sense Amber's desperate slide to her knees had actually worked — after all, not even a Legend could have anticipated such a move, and the Grand Duchess's train of thought had been cleanly derailed.
"I... I'm fine," Mo Jin said at last, blinking, as though jolted awake from a brief yet immersive waking dream. A trace of bewilderment lingered in him; his gaze swept across the figures in the little room before finally settling on Gao Yang. "Just now... I think I saw something... No, not saw — felt..."
"What did you feel?" Gao Yang set Amber down on the floor at once and asked, his expression unusually grave.
Amber wobbled a little as she landed. She first glanced up at Mo Jin, then at the stern-faced Gao Yang and Victoria. Only once she had judged that the great adventurer was indeed all right did she secretly let out a breath. Then, retreating to a corner to make herself as inconspicuous as possible, she pricked up her ears and kept watch on how things unfolded — while Mo Jin, the man at the center of it all, seemed not to notice any of it. He merely shook his head gently, as though driving off something lodged in his mind, and spoke slowly: "In that direction... what I'm looking for is in that direction. I remember now, I've been to that place! And I saw a hole torn there, a hole nobody knows about — very bad, there's a hole torn there... And another place, I went to another 'entrance' too... they're connected..."
Mo Jin's eyes grew steadily more confused and his words more disjointed, but just as Gao Yang and Victoria could not help but want to step in and help, the old mage suddenly stopped. He shook his head hard, and the clarity gradually returned to his eyes.
"Are you all right?" Victoria asked at once, instinctively, seeing the Mystic Pulse Sect member recovered. "Just now you..."
"I'm fine, don't worry," the old mage said with a nod, then lapsed into thought. He seemed to be sorting through, bit by bit, what had just happened to him, and several seconds later he slowly began to speak. "Just now I felt several layers of different consciousnesses rise to the 'surface' at the same time. Those consciousnesses were all me — memories from different periods, different states... My mind was full of my own voices and things I once saw. Goddess of Magic, I've never heard of such a thing..."
"Memories from different periods and states occupying your mind all at once?" Victoria looked dumbfounded. As a mage, this anomalous phenomenon was the first thing that caught her attention. "You mean — your memories have returned?!"
"No, far from it. But I think Miss Amber's treatment must have had some effect... I feel as though something once lost has come back a little," Mo Jin said, rubbing his forehead, his voice low and slow. "What was I saying just now?"
