Chapter 1061 — Concerning the Elements

Gao Yang felt that no normal person, upon learning that a supersonic object had smashed into someone else's head, could possibly say "Are you all right?"—not even if the one struck was a sea-dweller capable of rising from the dead. But Rebecca had said exactly that, and what was more, everyone present had found it perfectly normal. That, he had to admit, took real talent...
"Not every head is as hard as yours," Gao Yang said, noting the faint awkwardness in the air, and heaved a helpless sigh to smooth things over. "That out-of-control accelerator slammed Tyr back into her room and she revived there..."
"Ah!" Rebecca finally caught up, and hurried to apologize to Tyr. "Sorry, this is our..."
"It's fine," Tyr waved a hand. "Honestly, it wasn't so bad—I didn't even register what happened. But then again, that thing you built is genuinely dangerous. If it had struck anywhere else, we'd be looking at real trouble..."
"Yes. Dangerous." Gao Yang's expression turned grave as he looked at Rebecca. Tyr had already said it was nothing, but gazing at the wreckage strewn across the site, he judged it necessary to treat the incident with due seriousness. "There were no severe casualties this time, but this remains a serious experimental accident—the proper procedures must be followed. Once the aftermath work is complete, I want the responsibility report and the accident report drawn up, and the hidden hazards in the relevant stages adjusted as soon as possible."
Rebecca shrank her neck, nodding all the while she listened, and only when Gao Yang had finished did she speak up cautiously. "I understand... Ancestor."
Gao Yang exhaled. He knew that though the girl was occasionally careless, she never grew muddled over matters of real consequence. So once the accident-handling instructions were given, he turned his attention back to the experiment itself—
They had broken the projectile limit—a problem that had plagued countless scholars for ages. But merely breaking the projectile limit did not explain why the site had suffered such tremendous destruction.
Gao Yang's mind went at once to the accelerator that had flown off: the key clue ought to be lingering on that body.
"Have you found the accelerator?" Gao Yang looked at Rebecca. "It should have come down near the Whitewater River."
"A search party's already been sent, and we notified the patrols near the Whitewater and the security posts on the far bank," Rebecca said quickly. "Before you arrived, reports had already come back saying a deep pit, apparently from a high-speed impact, was found on the riverbank. By now they ought to have..."
She had barely gotten halfway through when a young laboratory assistant came running at top speed from the distance, shouting excitedly as he ran. "Your Highness! Your Highness! They've found the accelerator! It's being transported here now!"
At the news, Rebecca did not celebrate at once; instead she asked anxiously, "What about the site? How is the site? Has the shape of the impact crater and the residue on the nearby ground been disturbed? And why are they transporting it back directly..."
"Er—the ones who found the accelerator were an embankment patrol from the north bank. It all happened suddenly, and the patrol, mostly volunteers, didn't understand the technical details..." The young assistant had cooled from his excitement too, an awkward look on his face. "By the time the follow-up notice reached them, they had already dug the accelerator out. But the personnel sent to take over reported that the damage at the site isn't severe—the patrol was reasonably careful in digging and didn't rashly clear the ground."
"...All right," Rebecca sighed. "That still counts as good news. Anyway, remind them to preserve the site—I'll go look at it myself later. Oh, and the patrol meant well, so don't scold them; we owe them thanks when the time comes..."
