Chapter 851 — Meghor III's Intelligence

Night fell.
A myriad stars canopied the night sky over Xuanyao City, starlight and the man-made lamps of the earth shining in mutual brilliance; a kind of thin halo diffused from above the city, lending the starlight a hazy, illusory texture. Sir Gorosh lifted his head and gazed at the stars of this foreign land, and heard faint music drifting over from the prosperous districts far away.
The starry sky above Longlin Keep was brighter than here, though its nights were colder; that place had none of this bustle, yet it possessed a solemnity all its own.
Setting personal feeling aside, which was truly the better of the two—that was a question difficult to answer.
Asharaina's voice came from beside him, breaking into Sir Gorosh's thoughts: "Sir, your daughter has already left. If you still mean to stand here in the cold wind for a few more hours, then I won't be keeping you company—a warm room and a nightcap are calling my name."
Gorosh started from his musing, his gaze leaving the black, heavy night sky. He glanced in the direction Maggie had gone and shook his head with a complicated smile: "Do you think Maggie's meeting with me tonight was arranged by Gao Yang Cecil?"
"As long as we stand here, then everything that happens around us can be regarded as the result of the Cecil Emperor's arranging. Brooding over it is meaningless," Asharaina said, giving Gorosh a look. "The point is whether you are willing to accept these 'arrangements,' and whether these 'arrangements' will affect your judgment as an ambassador."
With that, the Dragonmark Witch paused, then added: "As for my personal view—this is not necessarily a bad thing. Every move Gao Yang Cecil has made so far has stayed within proper bounds; he has been careful to consider the dragonkin's feelings, and he is working to advance this whole matter. You may regard tonight's affair as an 'arrangement,' but you may also regard it as a gesture of goodwill and sincerity."
Gorosh stood silent in his pondering for a few seconds, then spoke before Asharaina could urge him on: "Lady Asharaina, I'm afraid I must trouble you once more—please contact Longlin Keep again."
Asharaina sighed on purpose: "...Alas, I knew it would come to this."
...
The night wind blew into the study.
Gao Yang raised his head from a pile of documents and saw Amber's figure swiftly precipitating out of the air.
"How did it go?" he asked casually.
"That father and daughter talked for a long while. Apart from a small mishap at the start, the atmosphere on the whole seemed fairly harmonious," Amber reported the results of her surveillance. "But as you instructed, I didn't get too close, and I didn't eavesdrop on their private affairs—I don't know the specifics of what they discussed."
"Mm, mainly because with your strength, if you got close and were discovered, you'd easily get beaten to death," Gao Yang nodded. "It doesn't matter—our primary goal was only to let Maggie and Sir Gorosh meet. Whatever comes of it... let it be. We're not counting on it."
Amber did not dispute Gao Yang's assessment of "easily get beaten to death" in the slightest; instead she nodded in full agreement, then glanced curiously at the great heap of documents before Gao Yang: "...By the way, you still have this much left to deal with?"
"Construction projects have broken ground all over the country, and there are new diplomatic, economic, military, and industrial plans. Although each department has its own people in charge, there is still a fair amount that requires my personal attention," Gao Yang said, glancing at the mountain of papers before him with a helpless smile. "It's actually not too bad—there aren't that many things that give me a real headache."
Amber scratched her hair and muttered: "Just handling the intelligence summaries from the Military Intelligence Bureau every day is enough to make my head explode..."
