Only then did Gao Yang hazily recall that Rebecca had mentioned notifying Tire to come—the salted fish was, after all, something of a technical consultant on military industry. But at the time it had gone in one ear and out the other—he had never believed for a moment that this fish would actually show up...
He had to admit: Tire had been of no help whatsoever, yet watching this muddled sea slug squirm about the room, Gao Yang's mood somehow lifted for no reason.
Perhaps this was the power of the Deep-Sea God of Mirth.
He shook his head slightly, banishing associations like "Deep-Sea God of Mirth" from his mind, then rose to leave. "I'm heading out. If there's nothing else, you can go back to sleep too."
"Hey—I'm awake for once in a blue moon," Tire said, stretching a lazy stretch three or four meters long, then rearing up his upper body and gazing in a certain direction with open curiosity. "Say... has something happened up north?"
Gao Yang stopped mid-stride, his intention to leave arrested at once.
What Tire was watching was a point slightly east of due north—the front line where the royal army and the Eastern Marches stood locked against each other.
So far, no one had told Tire anything in detail about the situation over there, and even if someone had, her temperament made it impossible that she would remember.
Why had she suddenly taken an interest in that direction?
Instinct told Gao Yang that this fish's reaction most likely meant she had sensed something.
"The battlefield over there is deteriorating. We're trying to figure out what's happening," Gao Dai said. "Has anyone told you about it?"
"Not really. But I think I sense... a bit of the smell of food from that direction," Tire said, blinking, then reared up even more vigorously, straining to look north. "A little bit like the giant squid..."
Gao Yang's eyes narrowed slightly: his instinct had been right. A sea-kraken who had dealt with the divine corpse of the Storm God for so long possessed a perception beyond human understanding, and the fact that his satellite view had been disrupted when overlooking the Giant Wood Pass showed that a special energy field covered that region. Tire's sudden fixation on the north... meant she had sensed that energy field!
He pressed at once: "Food? You're certain it's food?"
"Sort of," Tire said, wrinkling his nose—though it was not by nose that she perceived that "scent"—and speaking with some uncertainty. "But it smells a bit... off, somehow..."
Gao Yang: "..."
