Chapter 473 — The Value of Technology

The Sleepers' technology had always struck Gao Yang as immensely valuable—it merely needed to be reworked.
A portion of the Sleepers' techniques had already been put to use in the magic-net communications network established across the territory, but what Gao Yang wanted went far beyond that.
To him, the Sleepers' achievements in neurosurgery and immersive brain technology were equally fascinating.
Daniel was the most senior Sleeper technician Gao Yang could find. He had been a member of the Long Slumber cult for over a decade and knew the relevant technologies inside and out. More valuable still was his background as a mage—that "former profession" had endowed him with excellent research capabilities. Gao Yang often called traditional mages hidebound and backward, but that referred to the group as a whole; as individuals, anyone capable of becoming a high-level spellcaster could not possibly be deficient in mathematics, logic, or sheer intellect.
Sure enough, Daniel wore a proud expression. "My lord, research in this area has made great progress. Using the blueprints for that 'crown' device you gave me earlier as a reference, I designed a connection apparatus that ordinary people can use while preserving as much of its functionality as possible—including a connector that simulates neural cords and a brainwave amplification array. In theory, it can achieve the same effects as that crown..."
But here the old mage paused, a note of apology and nervousness in his voice. "It's just that it's still very crude at present. The biggest problem is its size—it's completely impossible to carry. Second is its energy consumption, which is also very high..."
Gao Yang listened without betraying any emotion, secretly relieved. As he had expected, entrusting this task to Daniel had been the right call.
The "crown device" the old mage mentioned was none other than the magical artifact Patty used when she slept. It was a complex and expensive Sleeper relic—the only device Gao Yang had encountered that could connect an ordinary person to the mental network. A portion of the runes in the magic-net communicators had been designed with reference to that crown.
But Patty's crown had serious flaws: like all traditional magical artifacts of this era, it was overly complex, precise, and costly—utterly impossible to mass-produce.
So Gao Yang had handed the crown's data to Daniel, tasking the old mage with redesigning a "mental network connector" based on his own artificial neural cords and amplification array, combined with the runes from the crown.
Now at last he had results—though still imperfect ones.
"Give me your current research data and blueprints," Gao Yang said with a slight nod to the old mage. "I will continue to refine it."
The old mage nodded hastily and reproduced the data from his memory within this virtual space using speed-writing magic. Watching the old mage at work, certain thoughts slowly surfaced in Gao Yang's mind:
The time seemed about right...
Daniel had already endured a long period of observation and testing, and the security of this hidden virtual space had been verified. Perhaps... he could consider telling the people he trusted about the matters here.
If Daniel's connection device worked, he could bring the territory's technicians into this virtual space. Using the simulated environment here, many research projects across the territory could be accelerated...
By putting Daniel in contact with Camille and the others, the territory's researchers would find it much easier to analyze Sleeper technology, and efficiency would rise as well.
