Chapter 416 — Those Who Journey Into the Unknown

After explaining some of the general issues to Hetty, Gaoyang turned back and looked at Kamael beside the communicator: "If this device can already work stably, then arrange a trial production run first. It's only through actual use that we'll be able to sum up what problems it has. Don't forget to compile a report for me on any newly discovered problems regarding production cost, manufacturing cycle, and difficulty as well."
"Yes."
Having finished the acceptance inspection of the communicator, Hetty was the first to leave the research institute. She needed to go back and study how the "Ministry of Information and Communication" Gaoyang had mentioned should be established. Rebecca finally hung up as well, reluctant to let go—mainly because she hadn't had enough fun, but no one on this end of the communicator was paying her any attention anymore...
Gaoyang and Kamael walked along the spacious corridor of the research institute.
"This will change the entire era. You should be able to understand the significance of that communication device," Gaoyang said without turning his head, speaking as he walked forward. "I think I ought to erect a monument to you."
"For a researcher, being able to explore the unknown is already the best reward," Kamael shook his head. "We succeeded in building the communicator, but in truth we still know very little about the whole truth behind it... I have only learned that the oscillation of magic can transmit information within a magic field, yet I still cannot crack the most essential secret of magic. I think that only in the process of cracking these truths will I obtain my true reward."
"A researcher journeying into the unknown..." Gaoyang could not help but feel moved. "This is a great undertaking."
"Yes, journeying into the unknown—but it is not only researchers who journey into the unknown," Kamael suddenly stopped. He turned toward Gaoyang, and the arcane radiance drifting about his body became calm and bright. "You too are journeying into the unknown."
"Me?"
"Yes," Kamael said as he continued drifting forward. "Many people think of you only as a far-sighted ruler, or one of great vision and strategy, but I can see more than that... As someone accustomed to advancing through the unknown, I can see something familiar in you. You too are challenging some unknown domain; you are trying to create things this world has never had. Even Cecil, developed as it is today, is no more than the tip of the iceberg of such things... You remind me of my colleagues in Fortress Defiance back then."
Gaoyang had not expected Kamael to suddenly share such sentiments with him, and not knowing how to respond, he could only say: "...That is truly high praise."
There seemed to be a hint of a smile in Kamael's voice: "The praise is well deserved, my lord."
Gaoyang smiled as well, but made no reply. He raised his head, and through a pane of white crystal glass set into the corridor wall, he suddenly caught sight of something on the other side of the wall.
That side should be a large engineering laboratory belonging to the Institute of Arcane Technology. In the laboratory, Gaoyang saw a great number of neatly arranged amplifiers and mana-web energy receivers mounted on a metal base, with many slightly curved metal rails, rings, and crystals placed near the base. It was clearly something not yet fully assembled, but from the portion already completed alone, Gaoyang could not help associating it with a kind of "weapon."
"What is that thing?" Gaoyang's brows furrowed slightly, curiosity on his face.
"Do you remember that when we first designed the 'cannon' weapon, we had two schemes running in parallel?" Kamael said in a tone of pride. "The solid great cannon, and the energy-focusing weapon based on the principle of the arcane pulsator."
"So that is the product of the second scheme?"
