Chapter 260 — A New Result?

The Dark Mountains were indeed an excellent breach for infiltration operations, but Gao Yang was convinced the Typhon Empire could not have mounted only this one infiltration. The Ansu-Typhon border was immensely long, and much of it was difficult terrain—it would be hard to keep the enemy from exploiting it as a gap.
After their long talk, Gao Yang arranged lodging for Sogilim. Given the high ranger's complicated identity and position at present, Gao Yang had him stay temporarily in a residence not far from the lord's manor, right next to Knight Street. On one hand, this gave him treatment befitting a high-ranking Transcendent; on the other, it made surveillance and control easier.
Even though he knew this high ranger would not cause trouble, he still had to put on a proper show for the men below.
After personally seeing Sogilim off, Gao Yang returned to his study—only to find Amber standing at the door waiting for him.
"Still guarding the door, are you?" Gao Yang blinked at the sight of the half-elf. "What's gotten into you today? So obedient?"
"Guarding what door? Your eldest granddaughter and that lightning fellow are inside waiting for you," Amber rolled her eyes. "They showed up the moment you left. They've been waiting ages."
"Hedy and Camille?" Gao Yang frowned. "Then you didn't have to stand at the door. Don't tell me they wouldn't let you in."
"Don't even start. Those two are in there getting all worked up over a rock, chattering away like lunatics. I was just off to the side having a cup of tea, and they kept trying to drag me over to explain the distribution of magic fields—my head was splitting. I'd rather wait out here for you," Amber waved a hand in complaint. "Go on in and have a look. I'm off to check on Anton and that lot's training."
With that, Amber vanished into the corridor with a single Shadowstep, not even giving Gao Yang a chance to reply.
Gao Yang stared blankly at the spot where Amber had dissolved into the air, shook his head in bafflement, and pushed open the study door.
And there he saw Hedy and Camille deep in eager discussion—and the so-called "rock" sitting in the open space at the center of the study.
Amber's descriptive abilities were clearly lacking. This was no rock—this was plainly a brand-new and intricate magical apparatus!
"Honored Ancestor!" "My Lord!"
As Gao Yang pushed the door open, Hedy and Camille—who had been arguing heatedly over some technical problem—immediately looked up and spoke in unison: "You must come see this!" "An incredible property!"
"Hold on, hold on—both of you calm down first," Gao Yang knew well what researchers were like once they had a result, but he had to get Hedy and Camille to settle down and explain things properly. "Hedy, you tell me—what is this thing?"
He pointed at the device in the open space. Its main body was a crystal cut into a shape approximating an obelisk, about a meter tall, with a deep blue-violet luster. The crystal itself was mounted on a silver-white metal base, roughly triangular, its center rising upward to hold the crystal body steady. On its surface could be seen numerous magical patterns and reserved bolt mounts—clearly it could be fixed and installed onto some kind of flat surface. At the top of the crystal was another, smaller metal device, like a miniature version of the base, its surface likewise engraved with magical patterns.
It looked impressive at a glance.
"Its main body is purified and recast Holm crystal," Hedy said, her face radiant with excitement. "And this device will solve the problem of magic-net energy transmission—it can spread magical power over a considerable distance in the form of a magic field!"
