Before the words had left her mouth, she had already planted her hand on the fragment's surface, then shut her eyes and began straining to establish a connection with the metal plate.
A moment later, her brows knit tight, her hand pressed harder and harder, her face flushed red, and even the table began to wobble slightly. Seeing this, Gao Yang hurried to speak. "I said connect with your spiritual power, not push with brute force—wait, you're going to press the thing right into the table, and you'll be the one digging it out!"
"Nothing!" Amber's eyes snapped open, and she pulled her hand away in utter discouragement. "I used my spiritual power! But there was no reaction at all—didn't hear a thing, didn't feel a thing... Say, you two aren't putting on an act to fool the two of us, are you?"
Philip: "How could that be! I clearly felt a very distinct enlightenment!"
Hedy frowned as well. "I felt it too, though it was very faint..."
Amber looked suspiciously at the two before her, then at the metal plate on the table. "Could it be that this thing has limited energy? Each contact weakens it, so what you two felt kept getting fainter and fainter, and by the time it got to me there was no reaction left?"
Gao Yang at once felt there was some sense in what the girl said, so he had the knight try again on the spot—and the result was the exact opposite of Amber's guess: the knight was once again enveloped by that wondrous aura, and Gao Yang even suspected that a little longer in contact with the tablet fragment and the man would ascend to immortality on the spot...
"It seems you really have no way of resonating with the tablet at all, Amber," Gao Yang shook his head. "Perhaps it has to do with the depth of one's faith. Philip is a devout believer, Hedy an ordinary one, and you are a lunatic—a shallow believer. That is likely the reason. By the way, are you really a follower of the God of Shadows?"
"Of course I am! How am I not!" Amber's eyes went wide at once, as though deeply displeased at Gao Yang's doubts. "I've believed in the goddess for over ten years, all right! Let me tell you, I may never have been baptized and never set foot in a church, but whenever I remember to, I've said my prayers properly—and the goddess has chatted with me several times!"
Hedy looked Amber up and down with considerable skepticism. "Are you sure it wasn't just hallucinations from drinking too much Shadow Potion?"
Amber immediately stamped her foot. "Don't think that just because you've got big breasts you can say whatever you like!"
"Ahem, could you two not start fighting the moment you meet—and over such trivial nonsense every time?" Gao Yang cut in with a headache, waving his hand. "All right, all right, I've nothing else for now. Go on back to your own work; I still need to think this through."
The three of them left the tent full of doubts, leaving Gao Yang alone at the table, staring at the stone tablet fragment and sinking into deep thought.
Judging by the reactions of Philip and the other two, this stone tablet fragment was very likely genuine.
And yet, what they had heard upon touching the tablet was completely different from what he himself had heard!
What was more, this "difference" was not the first time it had happened.
The last time, that high-ranking priestess Sandy had appeared to everyone else as a perfectly normal human, yet in Gao Yang's eyes she had been a glowing, semi-transparent figure.
This time, with the fragment of the eternal stone tablet, others who touched it felt they were hearing the knowledge of the gods, whereas what echoed in Gao Yang's mind was a communication log in which some faction suspected to be the Zenith Starship Fleet had banded together to bring down the entire realm of the gods.
Gao Yang could not help rubbing his forehead.
