Chapter 104 — A Stranger Meets a Strange Sphere

"I can't remember where I'm from, and I can't remember how I got here," the sphere said sullenly. "Your guess is right—I do come from a 'very far' place, farther than any of you could imagine. You people a thousand years ago had the concepts of planets and the universe, so you should have them too. I'll be straight with you: back then, the fellows studying me discussed it in private too, wondering whether I'd come from another planet. But I'll tell you, it's farther than that—a distance beyond the very concept of 'cosmic space.'"
Gao Yang's expression turned serious: "Actually, some astronomical knowledge wasn't entirely lost. It's just that after completely losing the techniques of observation and calculation in that field, the relevant knowledge degenerated and warped into legend. But didn't you say you can't remember what your homeland looked like or how you got here? How can you be sure you didn't cross cosmic space to get here?"
The sphere's voice was somewhat helpless: "I've lost my memory, but I haven't lost my common sense. The physical laws of two places are completely different—how could they possibly be the same universe?"
Irrepressible excitement and joy surged in Gao Yang's heart. A companion (even if only a sphere), a companion who had transmigrated just like him (even if only a sphere), a companion with whom he could discuss planets, the universe, space-time travel, and other such concepts (even if only a sphere)—for someone who had already spent who-knew-how-many tens of thousands of years alone in this world, what a thrilling thing this was!
Of course, he now had new friends and family (even if the blood ties were a bit distant). Amber, Rebecca, Hedy, Byron—these were all people he could trust. But could any of them discuss the universe and space-time with him?
Hmm... if Rebecca widened her mind a bit more, maybe she could manage...
Gao Yang struggled to push down the chaotic thoughts that had surged up in an instant, and finally sorted out a new question: "Are you so sure you crossed universes? Have you ever considered that the physical laws within a universe might be 'uneven'—that the rules could differ from galaxy to galaxy?"
"Alas, of course I've considered it, but it's impossible," the sphere said dejectedly. "My race has already explored the entire universe we live in, and we've even started figuring out how to punch holes in the world barrier. If the physical laws within a universe were uneven, we'd have written that in elementary school textbooks long ago... So from the very first day I got here, I ruled out the possibility that I'd merely fallen onto an alien planet."
Gao Yang was dumbstruck.
This sphere actually came from such a powerful and advanced civilization? They had explored the entire universe? They were even researching how to reach other universes?
Gao Yang was himself a transmigrator, and after discovering that the physical laws here differed from Earth's, he had already speculated about whether he had entered a so-called "alien universe." So the fact of the sphere's crossing did not surprise him. But he was astonished that the sphere's race could be so advanced... So could this sphere be his golden thigh—the one that would kickstart a technological explosion, sweep the continent in half a year, unify the globe in a year, and charge into space in two?
After entertaining that thought for a moment, Gao Yang chuckled: nice to imagine, but the physical rules don't even carry over... In a bizarre world like this, no matter who transmigrated here, they'd be just as lost.
And this sphere was probably even more lost than he was: a sphere only had a sphere's worldview, whereas he at least had Gao Yang Cecil's knowledge to fall back on...
