Chapter 589 — Huang Yan Cried

Years of Heartflutter · Page 2 of 2

"What? You're a special agent?" Huang Yan's eyes went wide, and she stared at Yang Ce in disbelief. Yet she did not doubt Yang Juehuan's words—after all, she had always trusted him implicitly, and besides, her superior had already made it clear that a very formidable department had put in a word with them, requesting that Huang Yan serve first class on this flight!

If it weren't a truly formidable department, Huang Yan's superior would never have obeyed so meekly. But if she connected it to what Yang Ce had just said—that he was a special agent—then his department must be powerful and formidable indeed. The two accounts corroborated each other perfectly.

"Special agent? An irregular, that's all he is!" Xia Xue cut in with a cold snort.

"Huh?" Huang Yan turned to look at Xia Xue, slightly taken aback, unable to understand why this woman had spoken up, and why she seemed so full of resentment toward Yang Ce.

Xia Xue had spoken out of impulse in the heat of the moment, but seeing Huang Yan turn to look at her, she grew a little embarrassed. She quickly lowered her head, pretending she had not said it at all.

"Heh heh..." Yang Jiyan could not help laughing. "I suppose you could call me an irregular. I don't go in for routine work—they only send me out when things get dangerous."

"What? They use you as cannon fodder? How can they do that?" Huang Yan was startled, having misunderstood Yang Juehuan's meaning. "Making an irregular like you handle the dangerous work?"

"Ugh!" Yang Ce broke out in a sweat. "It's not that they send an irregular to do the dangerous work—it's that I happen to be the most suitable for it. An irregular isn't necessarily the weakest—he might be the strongest!"

"Hmph!" Xia Xue snorted again. "Strong? Weren't you just saying a moment ago that your life was hanging in the balance and you weren't sure of anything?"

Huang Yan frowned. Simple as she was, she still felt some displeasure at Xia Xue's constant interruptions! After all, she was talking with Yan, and she certainly did not want an outsider butting in and causing trouble.

But the words "life hanging in the balance, not sure of anything" made Huang Yan uneasy. "Yang Ce, is what she said true? Your life hanging in the balance? That dangerous?"

"Mm, that's right..." Yang Yuting nodded, and did not hide it. "So whether I can come back from this trip, I can't say for certain either. That's why I hurried to have you come—to see you one last time!"

"Ah!" Hearing Yang Ce admit it, Huang Yan was instantly struck dumb, tears streaming down despite herself, frightened beyond measure! True, Yang Shuoxuan had said earlier that he was going on a dangerous mission, and Xia Xue had chimed in that this mission was life-or-death with no guarantees—but after all, that had been Xia Xue's words!

But now that Yang Ce himself had confirmed it, she was utterly at a loss!

Huang Yan's mind was simple. Hearing Yang Yanzhou say he wanted to see her one last time, she took it to mean it would truly be the last time. At that thought, Huang Yan burst into tears, collapsing against Yang Juehuan, her tears flowing like a river.

Seeing Huang Yan suddenly cry, Xia Xue opened her mouth, at a loss and filled with guilt! She had never imagined Huang Yan would be so fragile. Had she known, Xia Xue would never have spoken up!

Xia Xue's nature was strong, so she often spoke without thinking. But now, on reflection, had she not once been just as fragile? She thought of the days when she had first stepped from school into the working world, an intern in the police force...
