Chapter 266 — A Beautiful Confidante
Years of Heartflutter · Page 1 of 5
At Yang Juehuan's words, Jing Yu's heart gave an involuntary thump. He was going to tell her about his own affairs? Did that not mean that, in Yang Ce's eyes, she had become someone very important to him?
Though Jing Yu understood perfectly well that, at this moment, Yang Ce most likely regarded her as a friend he could pour his heart out to... or, to put it a little more intimately, a beautiful confidante.
There was still an impassable gulf between that and the relationship she truly wanted.
Yang Juehuan's question left Jing Yu at something of a loss for how to answer. Naturally, she desperately wanted to hear his story, but she was a clever woman, and she understood a principle: the more she knew, the closer she and Yan would appear—but it would no longer be the closeness between a man and a woman. A man and a woman who knew each other too well could never become lovers; in the end, they would only be the best of confidantes.
True, there were cases of a confidante being promoted to something more, but such cases were exceedingly rare. Jing Yu's heart hammered with indecision, unsure which way to choose. Instinctively, she wanted to draw closer to Yang Juehuan, yet deep down she feared that growing too familiar would cost her that spark of passion between man and woman.
So Jing Yu hesitated.
Yang Ce, of course, could not possibly be turning over as many thoughts as Jing Yu at that moment. Seeing her sitting there somewhat blankly, he found it very strange. "Xiaolu, what's the matter?"
Yang Ce rarely called Jing Yu by her name, let alone addressed her directly as "Xiaolu." Jing Yu was flattered beyond measure; her tongue refused to obey her, and she blurted out, "Sure, then tell me about it—"
The moment the words left her mouth, Jing Yu regretted it so much she wanted to slap herself. How could she be so rash? She should at least have calculated the odds of a confidante being upgraded to a lover, shouldn't she?
But the words were already out, and Jing Yu could not take them back. If she tried to back out now, Yang Ce would certainly think she had lost her mind.
"How should I put this... heh, you probably wouldn't believe it—back in middle school and high school, I was just like you, a good-for-nothing little punk, fighting all day long and thinking I was something special..." Yang Ce decided to start from the beginning. It had been a long time since he had confided in anyone, and Yang Shuoxuan felt a faint discomfort in his chest.
It was just that, apart from Sun Jie, there really was no woman around him to whom he could say too much. With Chen Shutang's upright character, how could she possibly accept the fact that he was an assassin who killed and burned all day long?
Lin Yanhe's temperament was rather delicate; there was no way Yang Ce could tell her such things and make her worry. As for Zhou Yanning, though their relationship could not exactly be called formal and respectful, most of their meetings were spent on flirtation and little ambiguities—when would he find the time to pour out his past? Even when things turned serious, they only talked about technical matters.
Likewise, Xiao Qing knew about Yang Moyi's special abilities, but she did not know that Yang Ce was an assassin. He could have told her, but Xiao Qing seemed far too busy; every time he looked for her lately, she was in the laboratory, and Yang Shuoxuan did not want to interrupt her real work.
As for Wang Yanqiu, the two of them understood each other without words. Yang Ce had always maintained a posture of strength and wisdom before her; he had grown accustomed to taking the lead in everything. Tell Wang Yanqiu these things? A man as chauvinistic as Yang Ce would never do such a thing.
