Chapter 260 — Yang Ce, Save Me!

Years of Heartflutter · Page 4 of 5

When Jing Yu finally finished the work in hand, she glanced at her watch and was startled to find it was already half past midnight. She had not expected to be busy so late.

That afternoon, Jing Yu had been in class at school when she received a call from her department head, telling her that something had happened at the company: two vice presidents had absconded in fear of punishment, and Chairman Hou Lin and General Manager Guo Jian were convening a general staff meeting, which Jing Yu absolutely had to attend.

In truth, Jing Yu could simply have called Hou Lin to ask for leave, and her department head was well aware of that connection. The reason he had phoned her at all was merely to go through the motions, for Guo Jian's exact words had been to notify everyone—those out on business, those on leave, all of them—to assemble in the company conference room at three that afternoon! Thanks to her connection with Yang Juehuan, Jing Yu already enjoyed considerable ease and freedom at the company, going in only when she had no classes and spending the rest of her time back at school. So when trouble struck the company, Jing Yu was unwilling to claim special treatment; she hurriedly asked her teacher for leave, flagged down a taxi, and rushed off to the company for the meeting.

With a matter this serious, the first thing the company's senior management had to do was steady morale; only if the employees kept their heads would the affair be brought to a clean conclusion.

Most of the staff, however, knew the background of Mingyang Entertainment and so were not unduly worried by the company's troubles. In their view, the two fugitive vice presidents would be caught sooner or later... Once the meeting ended, every department set about auditing accounts and filling out reports—work that ought to have been done at year's end but had now been pushed forward—and for a time the whole place was in a frenzy of activity, hens and dogs flying every which way. Jing Yu, of course, threw herself into it as well.

Though she had her special connections, she had no wish to stand apart, loafing while others worked; that was not the sort of thing she would ever do. The others might not say anything, but they would certainly feel resentful.

But now that she worked alongside everyone else, people genuinely thought Jing Yu was a fine sort—connected to the boss, yet approachable and unassuming.

That was the impression Jing Yu gave, and so no one gossiped when she frequently asked for leave to attend classes; instead they thought the girl was hardworking and uncomplaining.

When the work was at last completely finished and she checked her watch, it was already twelve o'clock. Jing Yu groaned inwardly—the dormitory must be locked by now. If she went back at this hour, would she even be able to knock her way into the building?

Declining her colleagues' suggestion of a late supper together, Jing Yu hailed a taxi and hurried back to school. Since taxis were not permitted onto the campus, she got out at the school gate and walked toward the dormitory.

She had not gone far when she sensed two beams of light behind her, like car headlights. Jing Yu quickly quickened her pace and instinctively edged toward the side of the road, meaning to let the car pass.

Yang Ce, for his part, had seen what Jing Yu was doing, but the road was narrow—a single lane—and Yang Juehuan's car was wide to begin with. Though Jing Yu had moved aside, she had not moved fully aside, and Yang Ce still dared not squeeze past; if he scratched her, the loss would outweigh the gain. In any case, Yang Shuoxuan was in no hurry.

Jing Yu had stepped aside, yet the car behind still did not pass, nor did it honk—it simply followed at her back, neither fast nor slow. Jing Yu's heart tightened at once; she had heard many tales of people being trailed and robbed at night, and Yang Ce's current speed was suspicious and strange. How could she not be afraid?
