Chapter 157 — Taking Sides

Years of Heartflutter · Page 4 of 5

Yang Ce gave a cold snort, thoroughly contemptuous of a coward like Sawenjisi. Still, it was time to stop, and stop he did. Behind closed doors he could deal with Sawenjisi however he pleased, but in public it was better to be discreet.

"Chief, please take these two fellows away. My friend Shu Ya was drugged by them—they meant to violate her—and I discovered and stopped them in time," Yang Ce said, turning to Nordens. He had heard every word of the exchange between Old Buffon and Nordens, and so he now issued his orders to Nordens directly.

"Very well, sir. Rest assured, I will bring these two to justice," Nordens pledged.

The two men, beaten beyond recognition, were bundled into the police car, and Nordens led his officers away from Loklali's private club. The whole affair was handled cleanly and briskly, and the parking lot, so recently full of wails, returned to its former quiet.

"Clan Chief Buffon, I am terribly sorry that such a thing happened," Loklali said apologetically.

"Find a car and get Shu Ya to the hospital," Yang Ce said, lifting Shu Ya into his arms. "Quickly."

Even though Yang Ce had already confirmed from Sawenjisi's own mouth that Shu Ya had suffered no real physical harm, he was still uneasy. After all, it was Shu Ya who had taken the drug, and even the slightest side effect would be enough to make Yang Lanxu's heart ache.

"I've already phoned for the best doctors in the city. They'll be here any moment," Loklali said hastily. He had called for them earlier—a way of pledging his loyalty to Old Buffon.

"Thank you indeed." Although the trouble had arisen at Loklali's establishment, Yang Shuoxuan understood in fact that Loklali was not to blame, and so he said nothing more to him on the matter. Since the man had even summoned doctors, Yang Ce ought to be grateful.

"No need for thanks. It is what I should do." Loklali knew Yang Juehuan's status was exalted, and how dared he accept the man's thanks? He waved his hand repeatedly.

Sure enough, before long the doctors arrived. They knew Loklali's standing, and seeing him bustling about, they could guess that this patient's identity must be far from ordinary.

They quickly produced a makeshift stretcher and began a thorough examination of Shu Ya. Analysis of the residue at her lips confirmed that what she had taken was indeed a common sleeping-pill compound, harmless to the human body. Only once it was certain there was truly no danger did Yang Ce set his mind at ease.

"Doctor, what should we do now?" Yang Ce asked urgently.

"Judging by the patient's present reactions, the dose was not large, so personally I would not recommend any medical intervention. The patient will wake naturally in a few hours. What we could do is pump her stomach—that would wake her sooner, but it would cause her considerable suffering, so I don't advise it," the doctor said cautiously to Yang Yanzhou.

Though he was an emergency physician at the city's most renowned hospital, he knew well how hard it was to please people of high society—especially those before whom even Loklali bowed and scraped. Such people they dared not treat lightly, and so the doctor weighed the matter again and again before voicing his opinion.

"Very well, then. We'll do as you say." Yang Yu nodded. Indeed, forcing a stomach pump on Shu Ya would only add to her suffering—and that was the last thing Yang Yongjin wished to see.

"In a moment I'll prescribe some medicine for the patient; she can take it once she wakes. It's really just a laxative, to help expel the remnants of the drug from her stomach," the doctor said.

"Then I'll trouble you," Yang Ce said in thanks.

Shu Ya would be all right, and Yang Shuoxuan's heart was set at ease. Loklali's reception had no choice but to end early. Loklali himself was summoned into Old Buffon's car and returned with him to Buffon Manor to discuss weighty matters.
